My my, the third Canon EOS R7 rumor in two days. If that does not mean something.

Latest about the white unicorn has it that Canon might announced two RF-S lenses (i.e. lenses for the RF mount and an APS-C imaging sensor) along with the fabled Canon EOS R7. Be aware that neither “RF-S” not “EOS R7” are anything official. These are just monikers invented by the rumoring community.

Says the source of the rumor:

At this time, we do not know what the lenses will be, but we have had a Canon RF 18-45mm f/4-5.6 IS STM on our roadmap for a long time, could this be an RF-S lens?

This is a rather irritating rumor: It has been spread for one reason only: there is certain probability Canon might indeed announce such a camera (i.e. an EOS R model with APS-C sensor). Sooner or later it will happen and someone will be able to tell they told us ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yesterday we learned the Canon EOS R7 (with APS-C sensor) will get announced in Q4 2022. Today we have a set of alleged specifications. How handy!

Here are the rumored Canon EOS R7 specifications:

  • 20fps
  • DIGIC X
  • 1x CFExpress & 1x SD Card Slots
  • 4K @ 60fps
  • 1080p @ 240 fps
  • C-Log 3
  • The latest hot shoe
  • A combination of ergonomics from the EOS R6 and R5
  • Announcement in August 2022

If you follow us, you know we still do not entirely buy it. An EOS R model with APS-C sensor? Why would Canon make it?

Here are the latest about the Canon EOS R7, the white unicorn in the Canon rumors domain.

Rumored since the beginning of the EOS R era, the Canon EOS R7 is said to get announced within a few months, and then gets delayed again. We heard it being in the hand of selected photographers and undergoing field testing, then we heard it will be the next camera Canon is going to announce. But now we are told that it will come not earlier than Q4 2022.

The Canon EOS R7, featuring an APS-C imaging sensor, is a camera Canon will make sooner or later (likely, but we are still a bit skeptical). So why not start a rumor as early as possible. As bad as it can go, sooner or later the rumor will happen to be real. So far it has just been a continuous delaying of the possible announcement date.

Here is a new, hot rumor about the alleged Canon EOS R model with an APS-C sensor. Is a Canon EOS R7 coming?

Canon Rumors reports that the Canon EOS R7 might be the next camera the company is going to announce. Unfortunately, despite coming from a “source with a pretty solid record“, the rumor doesn’t tell much but that the announcement of the Canon EOS R7 might happen in March 2022.

We have always been rather skeptical about the possibility of Canon making an EOS R model with APS-C sensor. Truth to be told, we are now slightly less skeptical. Some Canon patents suggest RF-S lenses (i.e. lenses for the RF mount and an APS-C imaging sensor) are at least considered in Canon’s R&D labs. Never the less, we still have a somewhat hard time buying the possibility of an EOS R model with APS-C. On the other hand, it’s likely that the EOS 7D Mark II and EOS 90D might not get a replacement. Which would give some credit to the white unicorn hypothesis (i.e. EOS R with APS-C).

Any thoughts…?

As if it wasn’t enough to have a years long rumor about an unlikely Canon EOS R model with APS-C sensor, now we have three (3) such cameras that are rumored.

Coming from Canon Rumors, this new, low rated rumor adds even more absurdity to the queue. Three Canon EOS R models with APS-C are said to get announced one day. Oh, and obviously the EOS M system is declared death once more.

The first of the EOS R cameras with APS-C imaging sensor that are rumored is the EOS R7, which, could it be otherwise?, will replace the EOS 7D Mark II. This one might get announced towards the end of 2021, according to the source. But that an EOS R model with crop sensor might get announced within the year is said every 6 months since 3 years.

Next one in the cabinet of unlikely events is the EOS R8, said to be the tool for vloggers and other video people. No dates here.

Next, we have the EOS R9, said to be an entry-level camera.

Honestly, we still don’t think this will happen. We get similar rumors but so far refrained from posting since we do not buy it. Maybe there will be an RF mount camera with APS-C in the future, and with future we mean “in the future”. We just can’t see Canon killing the EOS M system, as these traffic driving rumors love to state. It’s a best selling system.

Here is a new rumor about the Canon EOS R camera said to have an APS-C sensor and dubbed EOS R7 by the community.

While we are still a bit skeptical about an EOS R with APS-C sensor, the general consensus is that there will indeed be one. Since the very inception of the EOS R this rumor began to make its rounds. Latest has it that the Canon EOS R7 (not an official moniker) is already undergoing testing in the field by a select group of photographers. According to the rumor, the camera looks almost the same as the EOS R6. Specifications are expected to be similar too. Announcement is rumored to happen sometime in 2021.

Is this really going to happen? It seems to be assessed that Canon will not release a replacement for the EOS 7D Mark II, at least not a DSLR. So, an RF mount camera with APS-C sensor will continue the heritage of the EOS 7D series? It’s possible, sure. Still I can’t get rid of some doubts about that. And what does it mean for the EOS M system?

In the past Canon was asked about the possibility of an EOS R camera with APS-C sensor. They neither confirmed nor denied it.
