Review of the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art Series – LensRentals

The Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art Series is an incredible lens, with incredible sharpness and the fastest f-stop available in a full frame zoom lens. That said, I was left still scratching my head as to why. To my knowledge, I don’t see a purpose for owning both a 24mm and 35mm, so this lens fixes a problem that many people don’t have. While the functionality of the lens is great, I can’t imagine people who already own a 35mm or 24mm interested in what this lens has to offer. But if you’re looking for a discounted price yet capable wide angle lens, and versatility beyond a 24mm or 35mm, the Sigma 24-35mm might be the lens for you

The story behind the Canon Powershot G3 X told by the men who made it

Powershot G3 X

Canon Professional Network posted background information about the Canon Powershot G3 X by interviewing the masterminds behind it.

The launch of the PowerShot G3 X saw further technical advances made in compact camera lens technology and engineering. Thanks to a superb 25x zoom – offering the 35mm equivalent of 24-600mm – an unrivalled focal length was offered in a premium compact boasting meticulous levels of engineering and design. In an in-depth interview, CPN discovers the technical challenges faced by the highly-experienced PowerShot development team – Tatsuya Yamada (product planner), Hiroshi Saruwatari (lens R&D manager), Shuichi Terada (product operations manager), Kenji Takahashi (image processor development manager), Hiroshi Kaibara (sensor development senior engineer), Koji Sudo (UI development engineer), Yasushi Matsumoto (body designer) and Yoshihiro Miyazawa (lens designer) – as they took an impressive concept and turned it into reality. Read the interviews at CPN.

Canon Powershot G3 X review at TechRadar (scores 4/5):

The G3 X delivers SLR-like zoom capabilities in a compact package thanks to its excellent lens and image stabilisation, only falling down when faced with fast-moving subjects. It’s not a beautiful camera, but it’s well built and easy to handle.

Canon Powershot G3 X sample pictures and full review at Amateur Photographer:

[…] the real problem for the G3 X is the competition, in the shape of the incredibly accomplished Panasonic FZ1000 and Sony RX10. Both offer built-in viewfinders and superior ergonomics, meaning that the G3 X’s longer lens becomes its main selling point in comparison. It falls short in supporting the typical photographic opportunities afforded by that extra zoom, with poor continuous shooting behaviour and – again – no viewfinder. Granted, it’s smaller than either of those cameras, but not to a degree that really matters in practical terms.

Canon Powershot G3 X review at Luminous Landscape:

In the final analysis, I believe that Canon are “hiding their light under a bushel“, as the old British saying has it. For someone looking for pro-level image quality in a moderately sized camera with a reach out to 600mm equivalence, nothing can touch the G3X. If long reach isn’t needed then the Sony RX10II is likely a better choice, and if lower price is required then the FZ1000 will be found to be significantly less expensive.
