During the last weeks some rumor outlets pushed the possibility that the upcoming Canon EOS M50 may feature a full frame sensor. Conveniently, this came along with another rumor, i.e. that some uber-misterious presentations were arranged to showcase this very camera to a strictly selected and exclusive/elite public. All nonsense. We always told you that feature-wise the EOS M50 is placed somewhere between the EOS M100 and the EOS M5/6. Once more, it appears we were right.
We already saw similar “rumors” in the past, especially ahead of major photographic events. However, a tweet from Japan was enough to put and end to it. Nokishita confirmed what we always wrote, i.e. the EOS M50 has an APS-C sensor, and they did it simply by writing that the EOS M50 will be announced along with the Rebel T7. Seems to have been enough to convince everyone to stop the “EOS M50 may have a FF sensor” rumor, along with the “super secret presentation” rumor. Don’t ask me how and why, but it worked. A pretty powerful tweet, indeed.
Here is the updated list of the gear we expect Canon to announce ahead of CP+ (starting March, 1).
Canon EOS M50
Canon will announce the EOS M50 (coverage) in the next weeks (towards end of February is most likely). The EOS M50 has already leaked through certification authorities, and we got a suggestion from a good source that it will be announced for CP+. We are pretty confident on this one, though we still have no idea where to exactly place the EOS M50. We think it will be some sort of midrange MILC by Canon, i.e. positioned between the EOS M5 () and the EOS M100 ().
New PowerShot cameras (?)
We expected two new Canon PowerShot cameras for CP+, but are no longer 100% sure. The new PowerShots will replace the PowerShot G5 X () and PowerShot G3 X (). We consider these replacements to be most likely. Given Canon’s effort to split the market in as much segments as possible, we wouldn’t be surprised to see entirely new PowerShot cameras. That’s to say we could see more than two new PowerShot cameras soon. It is also possible Canon may announce new PowerShots later in 2018.
New Canon Rebel DSLRs
We also expect two or three new entry-level Canon Rebel DSLRs to be announced. From leaked certification data, we know there may be some Rebel DSLRs named EOS 3000D and EOS 4000D in Europe. And then there is the Rebel T7 (EOS 2000D in EU, likely), the replacement for the Canon Rebel T6 (EOS 1300D in EU, ). The Rebel T7/EOS 2000D too has leaked through certification authorities.
What else?
Here is the stuff we are less confident about. Canon may announce at least one new kit lens for CP+. In the last months there have been many rumors suggesting various lenses. We prefer being cautious on this since in the past we saw rumors related to new Canon lenses spin around for months if not years, only to turn out to be fake. Our personal take is, let’s hope Canon delivers some serious lenses for their EOS M system.
Latest murmurings has it Canon may also announce a new SpeedLite flash, the Speedlite 470EX AI Auto Bounce. For the time being we can not confirm it.
UPDATE: it’s now safe to assume the images of the Powershot G7X Mark III are fake. A well made one. The images you see on the display have been taken from Unsplash. One was taken with a Canon Rebel T6, the other with a DMC-GX85.
Not the first time a well elaborate prank fools the rumor community.
Original post:
Yesterday three pictures of what appears to be the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III leaked on the web.
Since then some voices raised doubts about the legitimacy of the images. It’s a common issue when images of upcoming cameras leak ahead of the official announcement.
We can yet not confirm if these images are real, or some elaborate CGI work. From the images you can learn some basic specs. The (supposedly) Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III has an 1″ image sensor, USB-C connectivity, a microphone jack (!), HDMI output, and a hot shoe. Not bad for such a small camera.
And then this 4K thing, which seems almost to be too good to be true. However, among the murmurings raising on the web, there is pretty good analysis by Canon News about what may indeed raise your eyebrows.
Powershot is not mentioned anywhere on the camera. Every PowerShot shot has PowerShot written on it somewhere
There’s no microphone holes
The top dial doesn’t have EC on it, which means that canon is actually removing the EC dial from the G7 X Mark III.
There’s no flash switch to pop out the flash (even though looking from the top it appears like it has a flash)
The buttons don’t look “canon-like”. The icons don’t match canon “standard icons”.
There’s no record button.
There’s no click / smooth button for the dial around the lens.
The video images show 120 minutes and 60 minutes which would classify this as a video camera and not a stills camera for European import taxation. This won’t happen.
There’s no sensor on the front of the camera for the infrared remote trigger. Every Canon has that.
no PASM dial
No quick menu / SET button
There are some good points in the list above. I noticed the not Canon-like buttons, and that there is no “PowerShot” mentioned. This is either a bold move by Canon, or a well made fake. See for yourself (images via Photo Rumors):
It wouldn’t be the first time that rumor sites get fooled by some elaborate prank. What do you think? We are not sure yet.

There is definitely new gear coming from Canon ahead of CP+ (starting March 1, 2018). We listed here what we expect Canon to announce in the next weeks. Stay tuned.
Images of the upcoming Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III leaked over at Photo Rumors. As you can see on the screen in one of the photos, the Powershot G7 X Mark III does some sort of 4K video. First time on a PowerShot. Cool looking little camera. Unfortunately so far no hints about specifications.
