CES is over, CP+ is coming, here is what to expect from Canon (EOS M50, and more)

canon rumorscanon rumors

CES 2018 is over, and as expected there haven’t been any announcements by Canon. However, CP+ is coming in March, and we are pretty sure Canon will announce some new stuff.

So, what can we expect to be announced for CP+?

Canon EOS M50

First of all, Canon will announce the EOS M50 (coverage) in the next weeks (towards end of February is most likely). The EOS M50 has already leaked through certification authorities, and we got a suggestion from a good source that it will be announced for CP+. We are pretty confident on this one, though we still have no idea where to place the EOS M50. We speculate it will be some sort of midrange MILC by Canon, i.e. positioned between the EOS M5 () and the EOS M100 ().

New PowerShot cameras

We expect two new Canon PowerShot cameras for CP+. The new PowerShots will replace the PowerShot G5 X () and PowerShot G3 X (). We consider these replacements to be most likely, but are not 100% sure on this. Given Canon’s effort to split the market in as much segments as possible, we wouldn’t be surprised to see entirely new PowerShot cameras. That’s to say we could see more than two new PowerShot cameras soon.

New Canon Rebel DSLRs

We also expect two or three new entry-level Canon Rebel DSLRs to be announced. From leaked certification data, we know they will be named EOS 3000D and EOS 4000D. There is also the replacement for the Canon Rebel T6 (EOS 1300D in EU, ) that will most likely be announced before CP+. The Rebel T7/EOS 2000D too has leaked through certification authorities.

What else?

Here is the stuff we are less confident about. Canon may announce at least one new lens for CP+. In the last months there have been many rumors suggesting various lenses. We prefer being cautious on this since in the past we saw rumors related to new Canon lenses spin around for months if not years, only to turn out to be fake. Our personal take is, let’s hope Canon delivers some serious lenses for their EOS M system.

What not?

Don’t expect a full frame mirrorless camera for CP+. The EOS 7D Mark III and EOS 90D will also not be announced any time soon.

That’s all for now. 2018 may be a very interesting year for Canon fans. Stay tuned!

The folks over at The Camera Store TV video reviewed Canon’s first compact camera with an APS-C sensor, the PowerShot G1 X Mark III. It would be a best seller if it wasn’t for the price. Watch Chris Niccolls critically examining the PowerShot G1 X Mark III ().

The Canon Powershot Pro1 is the only PowerShot with an L-grade lens

Powershot Pro1

Canon PowerShot Pro1 at a glance:

  • 8MP sensor
  • 7x optical zoom (28-200mm equivalent)
  • f/2.4-3.6
  • Auto, Scene Program, Program, and Manual exposure modes
  • tilt/swivel LCD panel
  • EVF/LCD works down to very low light levels

Before you get excited: The Canon PowerShot Pro1 was released 13 years ago. However, it’s the only PowerShot camera Canon ever released featuring a L-grade lens (see the red ring?).

The folks over at The Camera Store TV posted a 11 minutes video review of the PowerShot Pro1. Chris Niccolls got a PowerShot Pro1 in his hands and wants to see what features are still compelling, and which are hopelessly out of date. Enjoy.

Some more bits about the Canon PowerShot Pro1 (source: Wikipedia):

[the PowerShot Pro1] was the most expensive fixed-lens camera sold by Canon at the time, and thus the top of the PowerShot range. It was the first fixed lens designated a Canon L series lens, a designation normally reserved for expensive EF-series SLR lenses.

It has a variable-angle two-inch, polycrystalline silicon, thin-film transistor, color liquid crystal display with approximately 235,000 pixels and a colour electronic viewfinder (EVF) with the same resolution. The lens has a 35 mm equivalent zoom range of 28 to 200 mm. The shutter has a maximum speed of 1/4,000 second. The camera’s dimensions are 117.5 mm in width, 72 mm in height, and 90.3 mm in depth. Its mass is 545 g.

The PowerShot Pro1 was announced in August 2004, and then sold for $999. I found Canon’s press release for the PowerShot Pro1, you can read it after the break.

DPReview posted their full review of the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III (price & specs), the company’s first PowerShot camera with an APS-C sensor and Dual Pixel AF.

From their conclusion:

[…] Canon has really gone all-in on the G1 X III. The result is an impressively well-built and compact camera with a lot going for it. The controls are well thought-out, it’s capable of fantastic image quality and the autofocus and overall performance are excellent.

[…] The G1 X III is capable of outstanding image quality. Its latest-generation Canon APS-C 24MP sensor combines with Dual Pixel autofocus to produce detailed, accurately focused images with signature Canon color and great noise performance. Even better, default sharpening and noise reduction have been improved relative to previous Canon models with this sensor and processor, and so the G1 X III produces more impressive images right out of the box than some of its interchangeable lens cousins. Read the review…

  • Dynamic IS and Time-Lapse Video Function
  • In-Camera Raw Conversion, Picture Style

DPReview posted their full review of the ultra-compact Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II. While they found a lot of good, some things did disappoint the reviewer.

From their conclusion (emphasis mine):

The PowerShot G9 X II is very appealing: it’s as small a traditionally styled camera with a 1″ sensor as you’ll find and its touch interface makes it easy to pick up and use. It has a broad feature set, generally responsive performance and shooting modes for both beginners and more advanced users.

[…] the G9 X II is let down by its lens, JPEG processing and battery life that requires buying at least one spare. If you’re set on a Canon, moving up to the PowerShot G7 X II is a smart idea, assuming that you have an extra $200 available. The Sony RX100 and RX100 II are also worth consideration, though we think that Canon offers a better user experienceRead the review…

It’s not all bad, the sensor produces “vivid, pleasing color” and there is “fast burst shooting with large buffer”. DPReview’s sample photos are here.
