Canon Set To Announce New Lenses Very Soon (EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, EF 24-105mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM, EF 400mm F4 DO IS II USM)

Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS

Digicame (translated) posted what I am not shy to define as the first reliable rumor on what Canon is going to announce at Photokina 2014. Yes, these lenses are going to be announced at Photokina 2014!

  • EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
  • EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
  • EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM

The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM was previously rumored to be an EF lens, instead it is an EF-S lens. Not yet sure if it will be a pancake lens.

The EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is aimed at full-frame shooters, who will soon enjoy the benefits of the STM technology for their video shooting. This lens will probably be the next kit lens for the 6D. It will for sure be cheaper than an “L” grade lens. No one saw this lens come.

Finally, the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens is the successor to the Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS. Several patents filed by Canon in the past pointed in this direction, the latest patent being this one.

Stay tuned, I am sure pictures will follow soon.

Except 400mm, these are not exactly interesting lenses. 24-105/3.5-5.6 is probably going to be even cheaper kit lens for their FF cameras instead of 24-105/4, so new FF kit buyers will get worse deal. And why update 400mm DO when the current one is not that old?

  • The 24-105 f3.5-5.6 IS STM would probably replace the 24-105 f4L IS USM (quite old lens) as the new cheap kit lens for the 6D as the newer 24-70 f4L IS USM is the expensive kit lens for both the 6D and the 5D mk III. For me is very puzzling why this rumored 24 f2.8 STM is an EF-S and not an EF like the 40 f2.8 STM…

24mm for EF is MUCH more expensive to make. Not just covering 3 times the area, but also with longer minimum distance from rear element to the sensor plane, it has to be seriously retrofocus, preventing the possibility of being pancake.

You think a f/3.5-5.6 lens will replace a constant f/4.0 lens?
      Se my answer above!
An EF-S 24 f/2.8 STM would simply be the APS-C DSLR version of the FF 40 f/2.8 STM.
Canon are missing a normal prime lens for their APS-C DSLRs unlike Nikon and Sony who both have 35/1.8 lenses.

Surprised about the new 24-105 STM, since the f/4 L one performs well. The 28-135mm is really old and more logical upgrade candidate.

But more importantly, this is STM !!
So does that mean we are going to see FF body w/ phase detect on sensor. 5D4 or 6D2 ??

    • EnPassant

EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM may be the replacement for 28-135 IS!

why EF-S??? I was about to pull the trigger on an EF pancake because it would be perfect for my 6D. Really starting to consider going with x100t or the replacement of RX1… Smaller cameras and smaller lenses is what I need.
