Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Teardown (complex beast with organized complexity)

Canon Firmware Update RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS review

Roger Cicala over at Lens Rentals tore down the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens for the EOS R full frame mirrorless system. This is the stuff nerd dreams are made off.

It seems Canon was (again) able to impress people with their completely new lens design. There have been discussions and speculations about Canon RF lenses compared to Canon EF lenses (have a look here). Once more the people at Lens Rentals prove that RF mount lenses have an entirely new design, and are in every meaning impressive.

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L is a complex beast, but you get a quick feel for it being organized complexity, and it’s actually a much simpler layout than those other lenses. Some of that is from the improved optical design; there’s less glass floating around. Some of it is the use of linear focusing motors.

[…] This lens was a new design from the ground up. There’s no ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it’ holdovers. That’s a lot more work for the designers, but the result is a beautifully engineered, fully modern lens. It’s clean, functional, and straightforward.

[…] It’s obviously very robustly engineered from a mechanical standpoint. The internal composites are strong as hell. There are double cams, rods, and posts everywhere. There’s no play in any moving parts. We can’t imagine there will ever be play in the moving parts unless you run over it with a truck.

See the whole teardown at Lens Rentals.

A Bit Of Everything (PowerShot Hack, Canon 7, RF 28-70mm F/2L, EOS R vs Nikon Z6, EOS R vs 5D4)

Why do all the pictures you take underwater look blandly blue-green? The answer has to do with how light travels through water. Derya Akkaynak, an oceangoing engineer from the University of Haifa, has figured out a way to recover the colorful brilliance of the deep.

Review: Canon RF 28-70mm F/2L USM (One of the Best Zooms Around) – The Phoblographer:

Although the Canon RF 28-70mm f2 L USM is a massive lens, it’s also understandably so. The photographer who will spring for this lens really needs the extra stop of light and genuinely wants super high-quality images. That’s what you’re going to get with the Canon RF 28-70mm f2 L USM. Couple this with better autofocusing abilities that have come out recently and the exemplary build quality, and you’ve got an excellent lens–on paper.

Review: Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM – The Phoblographer:

The Canon RF 85mm f1.2 L USM produces truly beautiful bokeh, excellent sharpness, plenty of micro-contrast, and overall exceptional image quality. Its performance is quite snappy as well and it’s capable of focusing and tracking fast-moving subjects quickly and accurately. True to Canon’s heritage, this lens is built like a tank and features some of the best weather sealing we’ve seen

Canon EOS R Firmware 1.6 Available For Download (RF 85mm DS support, minor fixes)

canon eos r firmware update

Canon released Canon EOS R firmware 1.6.

The firmware update can be downloaded from Canon Germany.

EOS R Firmware Version 1.6.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

  1. Support for the RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS lens has been added.
  2. Corrects a phenomenon in which the function or setting value assigned to the control ring may change when the control ring is operated in Eco mode.
  3. Corrects a phenomenon in which the camera may stop operating properly during “auto transfer” when using Camera Connect with a Wi-Fi connection.
  4. Corrects a phenomenon in which high-speed synchronization with use of an external flash may not operate properly depending on the camera’s setting for C.Fn2 “Set shutter speed range”.

This update for the Canon EOS R is for cameras equipped with firmware up to Version 1.4.0. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.6.0, this update is unnecessary.

This firmware will not deliver significant improvements as the previous one did.

Go Tokura, Chief Executive Officer Image Communication Business Operations at Canon states:

With the imaging industry at a significant turning point, we expect photokina to fulfill its role as the leading exhibition in the global photographic and imaging industries. Canon is pleased to announce new products at photokina, contributing to the industry’s success.

So, Canon “is pleased to announce new products”. Expect the EOS-1D X Mark III and maybe a new EOS M and a new EOS R camera.
