Latest CIPA camera and lens shipment figures suggest the market is getting better.

As Digicame Info sums it up:

The number of digital cameras shipped in March 2022 was 66.2% (77.0% on a monetary basis) compared to the same month of the previous year, which is even lower than the sluggish 73.4% (90.6% on a monetary basis) last month. Currently, the restrictions on corona are being relaxed, but it is severe that bad conditions such as supply shortages and price increases for camera-related products overlap.

Of the number of cameras shipped, the lens-integrated type was 50.1% (62.7% on a monetary basis) compared to the same month of the previous year, and the interchangeable lens type was 74.7% (79.4% on a monetary basis) compared to the same month of the previous year. The interchangeable lens type, which was on par with the previous year, has fallen sharply below the previous year in March.

The number of digital cameras shipped by region was compared with the same month of the previous year in the Americas (73.7%), Europe (56.5%), China (67.1%), Japan (71.4%), Japan and Asia other than China (68.2%), and China. It is noticeable that it has dropped significantly from 96.9% in February.

The number of SLR cameras shipped in March 2022 was about 188,26, and the number of mirrorless cameras was about 224,970. On a unit basis, SLR cameras are still selling well. However, on a monetary basis, mirrorless cameras are about 3.6 times more expensive than single-lens reflex cameras, and it seems that sales of single-lens reflex cameras are centered on low-priced models.

Canon Q1 2022 Financial Results – Imaging Sector Doing Good

Canon published their Q1 2022 financial results. Nothing special here. Things are good for Canon.

From the presentation material, referring to the imaging sector:

Demand, mainly coming from professionals and advanced amateurs, continues to be strong as full-frame mirrorless cameras released by each company stimulates the market. As a result, we expect the 2022 market to grow by 5% compared to last yearto 5.65 million units, which also includes some carry over from last year due to supply shortages.

In the first quarter, unit sales of interchangeable-lens cameras were below those of last year due to product supply shortages. However, sales increased due to a rise in average selling prices, as we prioritized the supply of high-end models such as the EOS R5 and EOS R6, and also due to a significant increase in sales of RF lenses.

For the full year, even as the shortage of parts continues, we will continue to increase our product supply by using parts secured through purchases from new suppliers or by switching to alternative parts. At the same time, we will work to achieve our aim of sales and profit growth, fulfilling backorders to sell 3 million units, 10% more than last year.

This year as well, we will promote the enhancement of our lineup of camera bodies and interchangeable lenses, which include two new Super-telephoto fixed focal length RF lenses announced in February. As long telephoto lenses with focal lengths of 1200 mm and 800 mm, these lenses are extremely compact and lightweight,features that are expected to contribute to more people purchasing them.Going forward, we will continue to enhance the overall value of the R system,including bodies and lenses to solidify our position as a top manufacturer ofmirrorless cameras.

Nikon released a Nikon Z 9 firmware update. There are so many new features that it could have made for an entirely new camera.

Nikon releases the upgraded firmware for its full-frame mirrorless cameras — Version 2.00 for the Nikon Z 9, and Version 1.40 for the Nikon Z 7II and Nikon Z 6II

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is pleased to announce the release of firmware version 2.00 for its flagship full-frame/FX-format mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z 9, and firmware version 1.40 for its full-frame/FX-format mirrorless cameras, the Nikon Z 7II and Nikon Z 6II, on April 20, 2022.

Firmware version 2.00 for the Z 9 will support in-camera recording of RAW video including over 8K which was announced in the press release dated October 28, 2021. As well as 12-bit RAW 8.3K/60p in-camera recording which achieves rich tonal gradation, various video features will also be greatly evolved to meet video production needs. For still shooting, it also introduces Pre-Release Capture*1, a first*2 for full-frame mirrorless cameras. This records images for up to one second before the shutter-release button is pressed all the way down after the half press of the button. Furthermore, Custom Wide-Area AF that supports various AF-area arrangement patterns is newly adopted, enabling more reliable acquisition of main subjects according to each scene. In addition, some functions and features of D-SLRs including the Prioritize Viewfinder function have also become available so that Z 9 users switching from D-SLRs can benefit from consistent operational feel.

With firmware version 1.40 for the Nikon Z 7II and Z 6II, it is possible to prevent the focus point from unintentionally moving to the background in Auto-area AF mode, so that photographers can more easily focus on the closer subject when AF starts. This firmware update also supports the ML-L7 Remote Control, which allows you to take photos when away from the camera, facilitating the taking of selfies from a distance where you cannot reach the shutter-release button, and nightscapes which are likely to cause camera shake when the button is pressed.

Canon Announces New Flagship Field Zoom Lens for 4K Broadcast Cameras with a World-Leading 122x Zoom and Now Featuring Autofocus

MELVILLE, NY, April 12, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the launch of the UHD-DIGISUPER 122 AF, a new field zoom lens with autofocus for 2/3-inch sensor 4K broadcast cameras, featuring the world’s widest angle*, longest focal length* and largest zoom*. Along with the new lens, Canon will also release two new focus demand accessories – The Canon FDJ-S31 and FDJ-S41.

The UHD-DIGISUPER 122 AF is Canon’s new flagship field zoom lens for 4K broadcast cameras, and the company’s first 4K broadcast lens to include built-in AF. With the addition of AF with superb high-speed and high-accuracy subject tracking, this new lens enables the capture of immersive, high-resolution video, thus meeting a wide range of needs at on-location 4K workspaces that demand extremely precise AF, such as sporting events, concerts and other indoor and outdoor events.

The DIGISUPER 100 AF (released in June 2006), Canon’s AF-enabled lens for HD broadcast cameras, garnered high praise from the broadcast market thanks to its high-performance phase-detect AF. The new UHD-DIGISUPER 122 AF carries this legacy into the next generation with support for 4K video. The lens produces natural and smooth AF that can rapidly focus on subjects — even when initially far out of focus — as well as track fast-moving subjects while maintaining focus with high precision.

Canon’s new UHD-DIGISUPER 122 AF features a zoom range of 8.2 mm at the wide end and 1,000 mm at the telephoto end — a 122x zoom ratio, the world’s most powerful zoom range for AF-equipped field zoom lenses for 2/3-inch sensor 4K broadcast cameras. In addition, the lens employs a built-in 2x extender that allows users to increase the zoom range two-fold, featuring a 16.4 mm focal length at the wide-angle end and a 2,000 mm focal length at the telephoto end.

Alongside the new lens, Canon will also release two new focus demand models for AF-equipped lenses used with HD or 4K broadcast cameras. The Canon FDJ-S31 and FDJ-S41 focus demand accessories enable focus control and provide a variety of powerful support capabilities, including the ability to switch between three sizes of AF frames, move the AF frame within the screen, AF mode switching, and three different focus curve modes.

Availability
