Canon EOS 80D video review (and comparison with 70D, 7D Mk II, Nikon D5500, Sony a6300)

APS-C EOS 80d canon eos 90d

Tony Northrup on YouTube posted his review of the brand new Canon [shoplink 37471]Canon EOS 80D[/shoplink]. The 15 minutes review goes into all the new features the EOS 80D is packed with, and puts a look on how the EOS 80D it compares to the competition (Nikon D5500 and Sony a6300), as well as to Canon’s other APS-C offerings, namely the [shoplink 14246]Canon EOS 70D[/shoplink] and [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink].

Here is another interesting video review of the Canon EOS 80D.

Canon EOS 80D Hands-On Field Test (video)

EOS 80D

The usually not very Canon-friendly folks at The Camera Store TV posted an 18 minutes hands-on review about the new Canon [shoplink 37471]Canon EOS 80D[/shoplink]. Do not expect these guys to be enthusiastic on the EOS 80D. Never the less, a critical video review that’s worth to be watched.

You may also be interested to know that the EOS 80D features a newly designed sensor, with a pretty amazing noise performance and greatly improved RAW dynamic range.

Canon EF 50mm F1.0L review (critiquing a legend)

Ef 50mm F1.0L

Edit: the linked article with the review has been removed. The reason is beyond my knowledge.

Photographer and Reviewer Dustin Abbott has taken three months to check and review the legendary Canon EF 50mm F1.0L by modern standards. He breaks down the performance of the lens and why it remains important despite being out of production since 16 years.

Mr. Abbott posted two videos. The 17 minutes video below is the review of the EF 50mm F1.0L, the 18 minutes video after the first video is a more detailed and extensive look at the optical performance and the bokeh quality from this rare and somewhat legendary lens.

The video below puts a detailed look on the EF 50mm F1.0L.

In the conclusion Mr. Abbott states:

Without being contradictory, it is easy to see why the Canon EF 50mm F1.0L never sold much but also easy to see why people are desperate to acquire the rare copy that shows up on the used market. The lens is far too inaccessible for the typical photographer and too optically flawed for most working professionals. The Canon [shoplink 177]EF 50mm f/1.2L[/shoplink] has its own share of detractors, but in every way it is far more accessible than its venerable (and more extreme) ancestor. But it is the extreme nature of 50mm F1.0L that also makes it so desirable as a collector’s item. People are intrigued by extremes, and even the optical flaws of the lens will be desirable to some; a challenge to overcome.

The review comes with a huge set of sample pics. The Canon EF 50mm F1.0L is out of production but can still be found on eBay, and it’s not cheap.

Canon EOS 80D has greatly improved RAW dynamic range (new sensor design)

  • RGB+IR 7560-Pixel Metering Sensor

DPReview posted the results of their tests on the Canon [shoplink 37471]Canon EOS 80D[/shoplink]’s dynamic range.

The article is pretty interesting, and understandable also by non-engineers.

Previous Canon sensors have conducted the analogue to digital conversion step away from the sensor, an approach that contributed noise that limited dynamic range at low ISO settings (while still allowing the excellent high ISO performance that Canon’s CMOS chips built a reputation with). The sensors in the EOS 80D and EOS-1D X Mark II appear to have an on-chip ADC design that conducts the conversion within the sensor, shortening the electronic path and preventing this noise building up.

The results of exposure latitude and ISO invariance are striking. It was already known that Canon had a new sensor design (maybe also on the [shoplink 27620]Rebel T6s[/shoplink], [shoplink 27619]Rebel T6i[/shoplink] and [shoplink 29518]EOS M3[/shoplink] but I am not sure), now we have test results that confirm the new sensor design, and the better performance that this design delivers. The reason:

Canon’s previous design allowed electronic noise to accumulate after the amplification stage […], which had minimal impact at high ISO settings but limited the processing flexibility of low ISO files by adding noise that was visible if you tried to lift shadows or increase contrast. […]  Now that it’s moved across to an on-chip column ADC architecture, we should expect to see further improvements in future generations as the design is optimised. Read the article…
