canon eos r firmware update

PhotonsToPhoto appear to be the first to have published figures taken on the Canon EOS R sensor. Click on the images below to get a larger view.

You can see that the EOS R sensor has a similar performance as the EOS 5D Mark IV sensor (and to some degree also with the Nikon Z7) while the EOS 6D Mark II sensor show a clearly different behaviour. The Sony A7 III has a clearly better noise performance.

Canon EOS R Hands-On Review (a very good start, says FroKnowsPhoto, plus DNG files to download)

canon eos r

Jared Polin (aka FroKnosPhoto) posted a 22min hands-on video review about the brand new Canon EOS R.

Here’s [Jared Polin’s] take so far, this camera gets a lot right while still disappointing in some ways. But, I think it’s a very good start and will only lead to better future cameras.

Jare Polin also made a set of 8 Canon EOS R DNG files available (converted from raw). You can download the files (file set 1 | file set 2). Contrary to what some sites are saying, the Canon EOS R does not use the same sensor as the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. More information about the EOS R raw files in the video below.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III Review by LensRentals

The folks at Lens Rentals reviewed the new Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III. They got a close eye on the improved anti-flare coating of the lens.

From their conclusion:

So is it worth the upgrade? It’s hard to say. The lenses are identical in construction and sharpness, and the reduced flaring works better on a marketing level than in person. If you don’t have a 70-200mm, then this new one would be worth the purchase. But if you already own the version II of this lens, it probably makes a lot of sense to hold on to it, as the used market prices on it will drop once the new version comes more prevalent. But I’d like to know your thoughts – is this new release justified? Or is it just a cash grab by Canon? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III sells at $2,099 at B&H Photo | Adorama | Amazon

Photography Blog posted their first impression on the brand new Canon EOS R.

Their early verdict:

The EOS R is a promising first step into Canon’s future, mixing together DSLR-design with some new features to create a unique take on what a mirrorless camera should be like. It’s a world away from the early days of mirrorless, where the emphasis was very much on creating the smallest camera and lens system possible. Instead Canon have take the opportunity to make a reasonably sized camera with a mount that can support some seriously fast glass, albeit lenses that are just as big as their DSLR equivalents.
