Canon Set To Release A RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS Lens?

canon rumors canon news eos r7 mark ii

EDIT: Thanks to Robert M for having pointed out in the comment section that there is a patent for a very similar lens.

Canon might release a Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS for the EOS R system, according to a new rumor.

A low rated rumor (by the source itself) suggests Canon might soon release an RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS lens. Says the source:

[…] we have an anonymous report that Canon plans to announce a Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS in the first half of 2023. On the surface, that is a lot of overlap of focal ranges. There is the RF 24-70 f/2.8L IS, RF 24-105 f/4-7.1 IS STM and the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS. Adding a 4th lens to this range just doesn’t feel likely. It does remind us of the EF 24-70 f/4L IS Macro, a lens a lot of people thought didn’t make sense with the overlap, but actually turned out to be a pretty popular lens.

Time will tell. In the meantime, stay tuned.

Will The Canon EOS R5 Get Pixel-Shift With A Future Firmware Update?

canon rumors canon news eos r7 mark ii

There was a lot of buzz about Canon releasing the EOS R5 Mark II this year. Then the same source told us that, nope, no EOS R5 Mark II but a massive firmware update instead.

Now the same source claims a future firmware update will bring something called “pixel-shift” to the Canon EOS R5. What is pixel-shift? According to Wikipedia:

Pixel shift is a method in digital cameras for producing a super resolution image. The method works by taking several images, after each such capture moving (“shifting”) the sensor to a new position. In digital colour cameras that employ pixel shift, this avoids a major limitation inherent in using Bayer pattern for obtaining colour, and instead produces an image with increased colour resolution and, assuming a static subject or additional computational steps, an image free of colour moiré. Taking this idea further, sub-pixel shifting may increase the resolution of the final image beyond that suggested by the specified resolution of the image sensor.

Additionally, assuming that the various individual captures are taken at the same sensitivity, the final combined image will have less image noise than a single capture. This can be thought of as an averaging effect (for instance, in a pixel shift image composed of four individual frames with a classic Bayer pattern, every pixel in the final colour image is based on two measurements of the green channel).

Sounds super-cool, doesn’t it? For that reason alone you should take it with a huge grain of salt.

Stay tuned.

Canon Rumor: No More EOS R5 Mark II In 2023 But A huge firmware update Instead

canon rumors canon news eos r7 mark ii

It seems we will not see the Canon EOS R5 Mark II in 2023. Instead we will see a massive firmware update for the EOS R5, says the same source.

For some time it was suggested with some confidence that Canon might announce the EOS R5 Mark II in 2023. Nope, says the source, and adds that we will see a huge firmware update for the EOS R5, so that it stays “viable through 2023“.

The rumored firmware update for the EOS R5 might bring the following:

  • Lens breathing correction
  • Pre-shooting buffer
  • Removal of 30 minutes record limit
  • Vehicle tracking AF mode (bikes, trains & planes)
  • Additional tracking for more animals
  • More new and unspecified features

As the most attentive readers might already have seen, the features in the list above are all already implemented in the EOS R6 Mark II.

Not surprisingly, the EOS R5 Mark II is now rumored for 2024, as is the EOS R1, after years of “imminent release” rumors.
