Canon Pro Network press release:

Canon has released an updated version of its Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, which now supports – in addition to its current range of full-frame DSLRs – the EOS-1D Mark IV, EOS 70D, EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 7D, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 700D and EOS 100D…

Launched in September 2014, Digital Photo Professional 4 was Canon’s first sweeping change to its popular RAW processing software since its original launch. The latest version of DPP – version 4.1.50 – is a response to feedback from owners of older full-frame and APS-C cameras who are looking for the very latest RAW workflow solution.

Additionally, DPP 4.1.50 supports the recently launched EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM and EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lenses, the profiles for which are now available for use with the Lens Correction function.

Commenting on the update, Mike Owen, European Professional Imaging Communications Manager, Professional Imaging Department, Canon Europe, said: “DPP 4.0 has proved incredibly popular with our customers and this latest update further extends its appeal to a wider range of users, such as those using the highly successful EOS 5D Mark II. Canon remains firmly committed to offering a complete range of products to photographers and increasingly its software solutions are playing a vital role in delivering the ultimate in image quality from capture to output.”

How To Process Canon RAW Files to Match the Dynamic Range of Sony Sensors

Process Canon RAW

Thanks Albert

Roger Clark posted an interesting, technical yet easy to follow guide on how to process Canon RAW files to obtain a dynamic range that matches Sony or Nikon sensors.

Clark writes:

Canon raw data typically have an offset of 2048 in the 14-bit data range in the raw file, with a maximum of around 15,000. That means the offset is about 15% of the data range. In other words, the offset is less than 3 stops down from maximum signal! Managing this offset is critical to showing the full dynamic range of the sensor. Many examples shown on the internet fail to manage this offset properly and conclude that Canon has poor dynamic range. Further, as raw processing proceeds in the RGB data, the relative offsets can be changed, leaving ugly color casts in shadows at the low end of the intensity range.

Don’t get scared by the tech stuff in the quote. The article explains why RAW image data coming from a Canon sensor has more dynamic range than most people think, and how to properly process the RAW files to maximise the dynamic range.

Clark’s article is a step by step guide to the proper processing of Canon RAW files using Adobe Camera Raw 8.7 for first settings and then Photoshop’s shadow/highlight and levels tools to fully exploit the RAW file’s dynamic range. Canon EOS 6D RAW files are used as example in the article, and there are screenshots of the process.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Tutorial & User Guide Video

FroKnowsPhoto posted a nice video that’s an EOS 7D Mark II tutorial and guide in one. The video lasts 30 minutes and is a very good introduction to the game changing EOS 7D Mark II and to its features and settings. And it is a starters guide for those who just got their brand new 7D2. Enjoy!

The video is another good insight to what the new Canon EOS 7D Mark II means and can do for professional photographers, especially for those who are into sport, wildlife, and generally fast action photography. And as I said many times before: the EOS 7D Mark II is a game changer, in any sense. What Canon makes are not fancy gadgets but well-made, professional tools for those who care to have a thought-out camera for their job. And should the 7D Mark II be too much for you, then have a look at the not-less-impressing EOS 70D, Canon’s well-made all-round DSLR (with a much more affordable price). The 7D Mark II is Canon’s new APS-C flagship but the EOS 70D is no slough though, coming with many advanced features.

The EOS 7D Mark II’s AF-system is the best you can get on an APS-C camera, add 10fps, an amazing high ISO performance, and all the other professional features. Read more about the EOS 7D Mark II’s excellent weather sealing, the highly advanced AF, and the industry leading high ISO performance (have a look here too). All our coverage on the EOS 7D Mark II can be seen here (and there is a lot).

Canon Press Release Addresses Gray Market Products

Canon

Thanks Martina

Canon published a press release regarding the gray market issue [found via TDB]

WHAT IS GRAY MARKET?

Information on Parallel or “Gray Market” Products

Canon sells and supports Canon-brand consumer and professional products in the U.S. through Canon U.S.A., which distributes these products through its authorized dealers and distributors. Canon U.S.A. is the only authorized importer of these products in the U.S., and provides industry-leading customer service and support for them. Products distributed by Canon U.S.A. are “localized” to meet the needs of customers in the U.S. market and are engineered to comply with local safety regulations and governmental requirements. As such, these products come with different accessories, manuals, and warranties than the versions intended for sale in other global regions such as Asia. Any Canon-brand products which are imported and sold other than by this method are referred to as “parallel,” or “Gray Market,” products (collectively, “Gray Market Products”).

Hazards and Difficulties Associated with “Gray Market” Products

Customers in the U.S. may find that Gray Market Products do not meet their expectations because they were not intended by Canon for sale in the U.S. In some cases, sellers of Gray Market Products may attempt to localize the products themselves by adding, changing or removing certain accessories from the products, which may result in the following:

  • including in product packaging illegal or counterfeit accessories, such as batteries, chargers, and ink tanks, which can cause injury and seriously damage your Canon product;
  • an incorrect power cord or adapter which was not provided, or quality checked, by Canon;
  • incorrect software or illegal copies of software which may not function;
  • poor photocopies of the original manual;
  • a fake Canon U.S. warranty, a warranty provided by a third party, or no warranty at all; and
  • a device with a serial number which cannot be registered with Canon in the U.S.

Customers should also be aware that Gray Market Products may not be eligible for:

  • coverage under a U.S. warranty;
  • U.S. promotions, including mail-in and instant rebates; and
  • technical support

If you are in doubt about a seller, or whether the products it sells are intended for the U.S., please visit http://usa.canon.com/authorizeddealers for a list of Canon U.S.A.’s Authorized Dealers. New and genuine Canon products intended for sale in the U.S. can only be purchased from Canon Authorized Dealers in the U.S. or from Canon U.S.A. directly.
