TOKYO, May 29, 2014—Canon today announced the filing of a patent infringement suit in France before the Paris First Instance Court against Zephyr SAS, whose trade name is Green Eco, and the Hong-Kong and Chinese companies that both use the name Aster Graphics Company Limited, for infringement of Canon’s European Patent (FR) number 2 087 407 by, inter alia, the importation, offer and sale of certain toner cartridges for use in various models of Hewlett-Packard laser beam printers. Canon is seeking injunctive relief and damages.
Throughout the development, sales and marketing process, Canon respects the intellectual property rights of other companies and individuals and expects others to do the same. Canon remains committed to taking legal action against anyone who does not respect Canon’s intellectual property rights.
After the sad fact that Canon removed the EOS M from their USA site, this review is more than appropriate. The Canon EOS M got so many unfounded critics, often made by people that did barely use it. It started badly because the not-so-good auto-focus performance of the original firmware (which became much better with the firmware update). And most reviewers never considered all the other virtues of this fantastic camera, i.e. color rendition, solid build, light-weight, and much more. Not to mention that you can use all Canon EF and EF-S lenses thru the adapter.
At riflessifotografici.com they posted a serious and well done review, testing the EOS M in real world settings with a lot of lenses (not only with native EF-M lenses). This is a review I totally agree about, and what they write is what I experienced with the EOS M. The reviewer writes that he just can’t stop using it– same for me. I think there is no other camera manufacturer that invest so much resources as Canon when it comes to color accuracy.
Some more good points:
We’re on the same level of the Fuji X series and Sony Nex cameras as far as the sensor is concerned. What really makes the difference here is the lens lineup, or rather the lack of a lens lineup in Canon’s system compared to what the other manufacturers can offer.

In the conclusion the reviewer writes:
The camera itself with the three dedicated lenses is already capable of producing great results and it’s a pity Canon decided to provide only these three lenses. It’s even worse that the prime lenses lineup is not a lineup, there’s only the 22mm F2.0 that showed to be a great perfomer.
Despite all of that the M system is already enough to cover many shooting conditions with a small and inexpensive package.
A great addition to the system is the EF mount adapter that allows to use the existing EF and EF-S lenses with this camera. As I said before this allows to have a small and inexpensive package that can be easily used when the speed and accuracy of a DSLR is not needed.

Another rumor about the possibility that Canon may work on a new sensor design (Foveon-like sensor?), for a camera supposed to be announced in 2015.
The rumor states that “someone from Canon” payed a visit to some NYC-based studios with a “test 1D-X” body to do some strictly supervised test. So strictly supervised that images were allowed to be processed only on a special laptop (carried along with the camera). No images were allowed to be kept.
Apparently this test-camera produced images of about the same size of the EOS 5D Mark III, but showing a better color rendition and more details, and no moire-artifacts. This super-secret camera is supposed to be announced at the end of 2014 and more plausibly during 2015. If the images are of the same size of the 5D3 it can’t be the high-res sensor that others are speculating about.
Can’t say anything about that. However, it is true that Canon filed a patent for a Foveon-sensor some time ago. Please note that the reported rumor isn’t mentioning a Foveon-like sensor. That’s an information I got some time ago and didn’t post because I didn’t consider it reliable. The better color rendition, more details and no moiré point all in this direction.
The Canon-rumor-mill is getting chaotic in the last months, and I have to say that I am starting to feel always more reluctant to report all the rumors that surface on the web. There is a lot of wishful thinking related to Canon gear that’s floating around, especially since Sony announced their three A7 camera in the last month. But then: it’s Canon Watch’s duty to be on top of everything related to Canon.
The speculation goes that Canon may no longer sell their mirrorless system in the USA. That would be a pity, then this little camera is a wonderful piece of gear, despite all the harsh (and often unfounded) critics you may have heard. I have it in my bag all the time, also while travelling thru India in this very moment.
The EOS M coupled with the amazing EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens (which was never available in the US) is a lightweight kit that shots great pictures. I never had issues with the EOS M’s AF system, so don’t believe everything that has been said about the AF of the EOS M.
CR speculates that we could see an EF-based mirrorless camera somewhere in the future. I don’t think so.
