How To Power Your Canon DSLR All Day For Less Than $150 (DIY)

If you always have to carry lots of spare batteries with you then Caleb Pike’s inexpensive and simple do-it-yourself power solution is for you. If you want to get 12 hours of battery life then read on.

Says Caleb:

I recently purchased this NP-F970 Battery Adapter that is compatible with Canon DSLRs. I was a little worried about the quality from the pictures online but I thought I’d take the plunge and share my findings with you guys. After receiving the unit, I hooked it up with 2 Sony NP-F970 batteries and let if run all day with the camera recording AND powering my monitor… 8 Hours later, I called it a day and decided I like this thing. I still haven’t fully tested the unit to see how long it would power the camera and accessories but it’ll give you a full day at least.

As Caleb Pike said, the solution isn’t perfect so far. Room for your improvements :-)

Is It True? New Algorithm To Detect Processed Photos

Fourandsix Technologies launched izitru.com (= “is it true”), a free service that claims to be able to spot whether an image has been post-processed or not.

You can upload an JPEG image file and let the algorithm run various analysis tasks to decide if the picture has been manipulated. If the image was not processed, Izitru gives the image a “trust” rating. Can be useful on social media, for business etc. About how the algorithm spots processed images:

There are a variety of ways in which an original JPEG file, as first saved by a digital camera, may be different from subsequent versions of the file. Some of these differences reflect the fact that each digital camera has distinct ways of applying JPEG settings when saving a file. Other differences result from artifacts that are introduced when images are saved multiple times. We use a combination of six distinct forensic tests to look for these differences.

There is a FAQ, some tips, and to try it out head here.

Recently I found a paper about another algorithm, this time to measure the popularity of a photo (you can try it out).

New Canon Ultra Wide Lenses To Be Announced Very Soon (EF-S 10-18mm and EF 16-35mm f/4L IS)

EF-S 10-22mm486708

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm (left) and EF 16-35mm (right)

Digicame-info (translated) reports that they got word from a trusted source that Canon will announce 2 new ultra wide angle lenses in the next days. The rumored lenses are the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM.

So it seems Canon is going to replace two popular lenses: the excellent EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 and the highly regarded EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, although in the latter case it is less a replacement and more an addition of a new lens to the line-up.

Both lenses will get image stabilisation, the EF-S 10-18mm gets a bit slower than the EF-S 10-22mm (will it be lighter because of the smaller aperture?), the EF 16-35mm also gets slower and gains IS. The big question here is the pricing. At least for the 16-35mm I expect a price tag somewhat shy of $2,000 (the current 16-35mm is $1700). The EF-S 10-18mm will most probably also be pricier than the current EF-S 10-22mm ($650), since it comes with IS.

If you have a Canon APS-C DSLR and the EF 16-35mm is on your radar, think again and get the amazing Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art, a lens  with constant f/1.8 over the zoom range and that sells for $799, and a lens that puts the competitors to shame (Zeiss included).

Stay tuned, more to come soon…
