DPreview's review of the Canon [shoplink 7076]PowerShot G15[/shoplink] is online. Generally very positive impressions. From the conclusion:

  • Good low-ISO image detail and reliable metering
  • Versatile, sharp and fast 28-140mm F1.8-2.8 lens
  • Good balance between noise reduction and detail retention at higher ISOs
  • Fast and responsive operation
  • Very pocketable format
  • Fast and reliable AF system
  • Very effective Image Stabilization system
  • Excellent 920k dot screen
  • Optical viewfinder useful in very bright light (but is relatively inaccurate, and has no shooting info)
  • Lots of external controls including two control dials and an exposure compensation dial
  • Customizable control dials and Shortcut-button
  • Excellent build quality and body materials
  • Decent battery life

There is (obviously) also a Cons section:

  • Exposure compensation dial does not work in video mode (but you can set exposure compensation using the AEL button when the mode dial is set to movie)
  • No swivel screen (vs predecessor and some competitors)
  • No automated panorama mode (only stitch-assist)
  • HDR mode only works well with the camera on a tripod
  • Auto ISO only uses up to ISO 1600
  • Matt surface a little prone to scratches

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens Review By Roger Cicala

Lensrental’s Roger Cicala wrote a very positive review about the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens. According to R. Cicala Sigma had some serious quality control issues in the past, issues that now appear to be solved. Quoting:

[…] this lens is built solidly. It really feels more like a Zeiss 35mm than a Canon or Nikon. Sigma says there’s a lot of metal in there, and at 1.4 pounds I believe them. On the other hand, that makes it several ounces heavier than either the Canon or Nikon, but about the same amount lighter than the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4.

It feels solid, too. The manual focusing ring is smooth and accurate, although I found it a bit stiff. Not problem stiff, but certainly not move-it-with-a-fingertip. Autofocus speed was reasonably quick, about on a par with the Canon 35mm. More importantly to me, AF accuracy was good, too, even when we darkened the room down to the point where many Sigma lenses start hunting.

The lens is disassembled and analyzed. An interesting review definitely worth to be read.

Latest Canon EF-S Lenses And EOS 7D Mark II Rumors

Canon Rumors reports that Canon

has plans to introduce new EF-S lenses in the first couple of quarters of 2013. There will be a new push on the crop segment of the EOS lineup and new lenses are going to be a part of that revival. A few lenses are mentioned as highly probable and will appear alongside a new “pro” APS-C camera, currently expected to be the EOS 7D Mark II.

The rumored lenses are:

  • An EF-S zoom fisheye
  • A macro lens with IS
  • Replacement for the [shoplink 329]EF-S 10-22mm[/shoplink]
  • Replacement for the [shoplink 313]EF-S 18-200mm IS[/shoplink] that will have an STM focus motor and be longer at the telephoto end
  • Replacement for the [shoplink 325]EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS[/shoplink]

Moreover, delays in lens production are named, caused by new manufacturing technologies introduced by Canon in their factories.

Finally, the EOS 7D Mark II rumor got another mention, and the [shoplink 331]Rebel T3/EOS 1100D[/shoplink] and the [shoplink 335]EOS 60D[/shoplink] are said to get discontinued (see the rumor we posted a few weeks ago) with no imminent replacement planed.
