A new Canon Patent application describing a built-in tilting viewfinder which should also tale less space for implementation.

Canon patent application 2023104712 (Japan, published 7/28/2023) describes methods and technology for a tiltable viewfinder for an EOS R series camera body. From the patent literature:

[Title of the invention] Viewfinder unit, imaging device

Canon Inc. An object of the present invention is to suppress an increase in the size of an electronic device while securing a large rotation angle of a finder portion.

Description of the Related Art

Conventionally, a viewfinder unit provided in an electronic device such as an imaging device is known. For example, in an electronic device having a viewfinder unit such as an electronic viewfinder, the viewfinder unit is arranged on the upper part of the back side of the electronic device body. The finder section of the finder unit can be slid out from the main body of the electronic device, and the finder section can be tilted and rotated upward from the pulled out state, thereby increasing the degree of freedom in shooting posture.

However, in Patent Document 1, since the distance between the contact position of the pair of leaf springs with respect to the base plate and the rotation axis of the holder is long, the contact position moves so as to draw a large arc locus during rotation. . If the finder section rotates excessively, the leaf spring section will come off the fixed plate, so there is a restriction on the rotation angle of the finder section. On the other hand, if an attempt is made to design the rotation angle to be large, it is necessary to enlarge the fixing plate, which leads to an increase in the size of the imaging apparatus main body.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to suppress an increase in the size of an electronic device while ensuring a large rotation angle of a viewfinder.

Canon Might Announce A New f/2 Zoom Lens For The RF Mount (in 2024)

Canon might have a new f/2 lens on their release radar. That’s what a new rumor suggests.

Says the source of the rumor:

We have been told that Canon is planning a second RF mount f/2 zoom to “compliment” the remarkable RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, which is one of the best zoom lenses ever made.

The source didn’t know the focal length of the rumored lens, but did say to expect it some time in the first half of 2024.

Not much to rant about. Rumors that suggests release dates so far away in most cases are educated speculation, or wishful thinking. Nice for the rumor and fun community but to be taken with truckloads of salt.

Forget silly rumors, go out and take pictures.

The folks at DPReview posted their full Canon EOS R8 review. They gave it a Silver Award and a rating of 87%. Form their conclusion:

While the EOS R8 is hardly the highest-performing camera we’ve seen from Canon lately, it is an exemplary entry-grade option. It gives camera buyers most of the performance of the higher end EOS R6 II, but in a simplified package, rendering it straightforward enough for those trying a modern full-frame camera for the first time. The small shape and light weight make it easy to handle, and convenient to pack for a trip with its kit lens in tow.

[…] The biggest problem that the Canon EOS R8 runs into time and time again is its weak battery life. Although from a features and image quality perspective the R8 is highly competitive, the battery life is worst-in-class. On paper and in our experience, this is the camera’s Achilles heel, with anything intensive destroying battery life. With competing cameras like the Sony a7C or Nikon Z5 you’ll get up to double the number of images on a single charge. In an age where we have DSLR-like battery life from high-performance mirrorless cameras, the EOS R8 feels like the bad kind of throwback. If you pick up an EOS R8, spend the money for a spare battery – or a USB-C PD battery pack.

And yet another Canon patent application for an RF-mount lens.

Canon patent application 2023099390 (Japan, published 7/13/2023) discusses optical formulas for what appears to be an RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM lens.

From the patent literature:

Optical System and Imaging Device Having the Same

An object of the present invention is to provide an optical system equipped with an anti-vibration group that achieves both miniaturization and high anti-vibration performance, and an imaging apparatus having the optical system.
Telephoto lenses equipped with anti-vibration groups are required to achieve both miniaturization and high anti-vibration performance . In the telephoto lens equipped with the anti-vibration group of Patent Document 1, the anti-vibration performance is ensured by arranging the anti-vibration group at a position slightly away from the image plane position toward the object side, but it is difficult to reduce the size.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide an optical system equipped with a vibration reduction group that achieves both miniaturization and high vibration reduction performance, and an imaging apparatus having the optical system.
