Canon Released Another Firmware Update For EOS R5 and EOS R6

Canon EOS R5 Firmware Update Sony A7s Iii

A few weeks after the firmware update for the EOS R5, Canon released new firmware updates for the EOS R5 and EOS R6.

This time the firmware update appears to be more for the Canon EOS R6 than for the EOS R5, since it tackles with heat production on the R6. The R5 already had a firmware update coping with this.

Canon EOS R6 firmware 1.1.1 (download) incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. A messaging is displayed when [HDMI display: Camera+External monitor] and [Overheat control: on] settings are both enabled.
  2. When the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is attached, an image stabilization effect of approximately six stops* is achieved through collaborative control with the in-lens image stabilization.
*Focal length 500mm, Based on CIPA(Camera & Imaging Products Association) standards.
  3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the IS capabilities may be degraded when performing continuous shooting in cases where the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens is attached to the EOS R6 running firmware version 1.1.0.
  4. When using certain RF lenses for movie shooting, the in-lens image stabilization mechanism has been improved.
  5. Fixes a phenomenon in which the “Slow Synchro” setting screen is not accurately displayed, when the language is set to English.
  6. Fixes a typo displayed on the communication setting screen, when the language is set to Korean.
  7. Connectivity during FTP transmission has been improved.
  8. Temperature detection and shooting time control in video shooting have been improved. In addition, the total shooting time when the short-time recording and power-on/off are performed repeatedly at room temperature is improved.
  9. The phenomenon in which the movie recording time available is not correctly displayed when the Date/Time/Zone is not set has been corrected.

Canon EOS R5 firmware 1.1.1 (download) incorporates the following fix and enhancement:

  1. When the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens is attached, an image stabilization effect of approximately six stops* is achieved through collaborative control with the in-lens image stabilization.
*Focal length 500mm, Based on CIPA(Camera & Imaging Products Association) standards.
  2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the IS capabilities may be degraded when performing continuous shooting in cases where the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens is attached to the EOS R5 running firmware version 1.1.0.

Canon EOS R5 Teardown: Weather Sealing A Step Up From Anything Seen Before

Canon Eos R5 Teardown

Roger Cicala at Lens Rentals published his Canon EOS R5 teardown. It seems the R5 has the best weather sealing in the industry.

Roger Cicala says that the weather sealing “seems to be a step up from anything we’ve seen before“. And that means also that there is little opportunity for the heat to escape. Mr. Cicala explains it:

There seem to be two separate heat sinks, one under the voltage board, another between the main PCB and the sensor assembly, with thermal pads to direct heat to each. At least one of them connects to the tripod plate, which might provide a secondary sink. This is a lot of heat sink compared to most photo cameras, but not even a fraction of what we see in a video camera. What I can’t tell from this is how that heat then gets out of the camera. It’s sure not air circulation.

Given how tightly sealed things are, I’m curious as to where the heat goes to get out of the camera; some further investigation is required there.

[…]

I’m a simple person. All I can think of is, ‘how does the heat get out of the camera?’ Sure it goes into the metal sinks, but once they heat up, then where? In a small photo camera, there’s not a lot of ventilation/convection current to get let the heat out. This camera is better sealed than most; I doubt there’s very much ventilation at all.

To me it’s clear: Canon made a game changer with the EOS R5. The artificially ignited overheating soap opera won’t change much. The Canon EOS R5 teardown is documented with pictures and text and step by step, and it’s absolutely worth to be seen at Lens Rentals.

The EOS R5 seems to be highly regarded as a stills camera. In particular, the EOS R5 autofocus system seems to be huge leap forwards. Canon’s High Resolution EOS R Camera Undergoing Field Testing?

High Resolution Eos R

Did you forget about the high resolution EOS R model we reported first about and that was confirmed by a Canon exec? Well, it’s here again.

A new rumor about the high resolution EOS R showed up, and it seems it sums up everything that was rumored in the past. The source claims that a small group of selected photographers is already testing this camera. The rumored resolution is 90MP, which fits pretty well with the resolution we were tipped last year. There is also a Canon patent that seems to confirm what our sources told us.

All in all there is nothing new coming with this rumor. Sometimes the interweb just recycles what is already there, and easily gets forgotten. That’s how the rumor industry works. Take it or leave it. The only new information coming with this rumor concerns the EVF (Electric ViewFinder), said to be larger than on actual models.

That’s all. So far no specifications nor an announcement date have been suggested.

Stay tuned.
