Canon EOS R for Astrophotography Coming?

Does Canon have an EOS R model dedicated to astrophotography on their agenda? This is what a new rumor suggests.

A Canon EOS R model for astrophotography is plausible, at least. A mirrorless camera makes astrophotography easier for some aspects. No mirror mechanism. However, the same can be achieved on virtually any modern DSLR by using live view and locking the mirror.

As far as we know there is no Canon camera dedicated to astrophotography and with a full frame sensor. The most recent Canon DSLR dedicated to this peculiar kind of photography is the Canon EOS 60Da.

The EOS 60Da uses a specially made infrared blocking optical low-pass filter that allows the light normally blocked by a typical DSLR’s filter to be captured by the camera’s sensor. An EOS R dedicated to astrophotography would most likely feature a modified full frame sensor, i.e. different for those seen so far. Or might this astrophotography-wise EOS R just be the rumored high resolution EOS R model?

While being a rumor that might come to reality, the source gave it a low rating. There is also the fact that actually there are no native RF lenses suited for astrophotography, so take it with a grain of salt.

Photography Blog posted the full review of the Canon EF 70-200mm F4L IS II lens. They gave the EF 70-200mm F4L IS II a rating of 4.5/5 and “highly recommended”.

The new EF 70-200mm F4L IS II USM represents a major update of Canon’s venerable 70-200mm F4 lens, replacing the 12 year old Mark I version by introducing a number of significant improvements.

These most notably include a vastly-improved image stabilization system, reduced minimum focus distance and an improved maximum magnification rating, better weather-sealing, a new 9-blade rounded aperture, and new lens coatings to help reduce flare/ghosting and to assist with keeping the lens clean, topped off with very good image quality when shooting wide-open and outstanding performance from f/5.6-f/11.

All of which makes this the best 70-200mm F4 lens that Canon have ever released, in turn narrowing the gap to the flagship Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS III USM.

The new EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS III USM is a rather modest update of Canon’s venerable 70-200mm F2.8 lens for professional users, replacing the 9 year old Mark II version by introducing a small number of minor improvements, most notably new lens coatings to help reduce flare/ghosting and to assist with keeping the lens clean. 

So while there’s little reason for owners of the previous version to rush out and buy this new edition, any Canon owner looking for a great 70-200mm F2.8 lens should definitely add the Mark III to their shopping list.
