OpticalLimits (formerly known as Photozone.de) tested the Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS lens. The EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS is a so-called “kit lens”, though a pretty decent one.

From the conclusion:

Optically it is decent. In terms of resolution, it doesn’t reach the full potential of the sensor but the center quality is easily very good across the relevant focal length and aperture range. The outer image region isn’t hot at 18mm at f/3.5 and 24mm at f/4 but other than that it’s pretty sharp really. The lateral CAs are moderate overall. Unlike most competing lenses (in other systems), the lens DOES NOT rely on distortion correction. There are strong barrel distortions at 18mm but in the mirrorless system scope that’s pretty much Ok actually.

Another positive aspect is the lens construction. Let’s be honest – kit lenses are usually built to the very lowest build quality standards. This is not the case here. It feels plenty sturdy and it’s quite fun to use. The AF is reasonably fast and silent. Canon’s image stabilizer is well proven and does its job nicely in this lens as well. Read the review…

Canon has a long history in making kit lenses and inexpensive lenses that perform very decently for the price asked. The EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS sells for $299.

Canon released new version of their photo software.

Digital Photo Professional (ver. 4.8.20), EOS Utility (ver. 3.8.20), and Picture Style Editor (ver. 1.20.20) now support the following Canon cameras:

  • EOS Kiss M/EOS M50
  • EOS REBEL T100/EOS 4000D/EOS 3000D
  • EOS Kiss X90/EOS REBEL T7/EOS 2000D/EOS 1500D

Digital Photo Professional 4.8.20 now supports MOV movies and MP4 movies shot with a camera compatible with Digital Photo Professional.

Canon patent application in Japan 2018-031935 describes a 15-105mm F/1.8-6.0 lens for APS-C cameras.

May this patent refer to the EF-M mount? Can someone help understanding? All over the patent literature there are mentions about making this lens small, compact, “miniaturising a zoom lens” etc.

Excerpts from the patent literature:

In the present invention, it is related with a zoom lens in which small-diameter-izing of photographing length and a diameter of a body tube is possible.
Therefore, it is suitable to especially a digital camera.

[…] in order to realize a miniaturization, it is required to set up the refracting power of each lens group strongly.
While a zoom ratio exceeds 4x -, there are many zoom lenses of the positive lead type which a positive lens group precedes in a twice [ quantity ] as many zoom lens as this.

When such a zoom lens is miniaturized, each group refractive power arrangement needs to design, while the tendency which becomes strong is shown, refracting power is shared about the lens group composition and attention is further paid also for glass arrangement.

Well, a zoom lens going from 15-105mm, and with a starting f/1.8 sound cool. The f/6 at the telephoto end less. Lets hope this Canon patent will go to market for the EOS M.
