Canon patent application for space aircraft and artificial satellite

canon

We reported about Canon’s conquer of space before. Regular Canon Watch visitors already know that Canon builds artificial satellites and fires small rockets into space.

Canon patent applications 2018-030556 and 2018-025463 describe the technology Canon used to move into space. In case you have doubts: we are not kidding you. Canon is indeed building satellites and mini rockets.

Excerpts from the patent literature describing a space aircraft and its structure (machine translated):

The present invention is a spacecraft body structure thing transported to space, and relates to the spacecraft body structure thing and spacecraft object which are connected so that mutual internal space may communicate unidirectionally.

[…]

It is a spacecraft body structure thing transported to space, A pair of cylindrical body connected so that mutual internal space may communicate unidirectionally,
It has a reinforcing member which is joined by inner peripheral surface of each body which constitutes said pair of cylindrical body, respectively, and reinforces the aforementioned body, A spacecraft body structure thing comprising: A through-hole which penetrates a plate-like member from which the aforementioned reinforcing member constitutes the aforementioned reinforcing member to a thickness direction.
A rib structure part formed at a part of aforementioned plate-like member so that an opening of the aforementioned through-hole might be surrounded in an opening peripheral edge part of the aforementioned through-hole.

The other patent describes solar energy supply, and acquisition and transmission of data (also machine translated):

The present invention relates to the information processing apparatus which treats the point which carries out light reception through light guide holes, such as a pinhole, for example, the sunlight photo detector incorporating this information processing apparatus, and the artificial satellite which mounted this sunlight photo detector.

An information processing apparatus capable of highly accurately extracting a spot of light to be detected, a solar light receiving element, and an artificial satellite are provided.
An acquisition unit configured to acquire image data obtained by receiving an incident light from the light guide hole by an image sensor facing a light guide hole of the light guide member; and an acquisition unit configured to acquire image data And extracting means for extracting a point image satisfying a predetermined luminance condition. More preferably, the extracting means extracts a point image having the highest luminance among the plurality of point images when there are a plurality of point images satisfying a predetermined luminance condition in the image data.

Well, it’s not all about photography when it comes to Canon. Recently, the Japanese company moved into automated indoor gardening.

Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera to be announced before Photokina?

Canon Rumorscanon rumors

We have been told (thanks) that Canon may announce the long rumored full frame mirrorless camera before Photokina 2018, which happens in September.

So far we know as good as nothing about Canon’s full frame MILC. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.

If 2018 is the year Canon will eventually announce such a mirrorless camera, then Photokina may indeed be the best event to showcase it. Let’s hope this rumor becomes true.

Stay tuned.

Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS review

EF-M 18-55mm

At a glance:

  • Standard zoom lens for Canon EOS M digital camera with image stabilization for up to four eqiuvalent stops of shake correctoin
  • Supports continuous AF during video shooting
  • Circular aperture (7 blades) for soft backgrounds
  • Maximum magnification of 0.25x at the telephoto end
  • Minimum focusing distance: 9.8 in./0.25m (full zoom range)

OpticalLimits (formerly known as Photozone.de) tested the Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS lens. The EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS is a so-called “kit lens”, though a pretty decent one.

From the conclusion:

Optically it is decent. In terms of resolution, it doesn’t reach the full potential of the sensor but the center quality is easily very good across the relevant focal length and aperture range. The outer image region isn’t hot at 18mm at f/3.5 and 24mm at f/4 but other than that it’s pretty sharp really. The lateral CAs are moderate overall. Unlike most competing lenses (in other systems), the lens DOES NOT rely on distortion correction. There are strong barrel distortions at 18mm but in the mirrorless system scope that’s pretty much Ok actually.

Another positive aspect is the lens construction. Let’s be honest – kit lenses are usually built to the very lowest build quality standards. This is not the case here. It feels plenty sturdy and it’s quite fun to use. The AF is reasonably fast and silent. Canon’s image stabilizer is well proven and does its job nicely in this lens as well. Read the review…

Canon has a long history in making kit lenses and inexpensive lenses that perform very decently for the price asked. The EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS sells for $299.
