Kai W, alias Kaiman Wong, posted his full video review of the brand new Canon EOS M50.

Beside the sleek and stylish design, the first time of 4K video on a Canon consumer camera, and all the other bells and whistles that come with the EOS M50, the question many want to hear answered is if the M50 is the new best vlogging tool for people on a budget. My personal opinion is yes, but watch and hear Kai to get the whole picture.

Canon itself said they see the EOS M50 as a “strategic model“. In recently published documents of the company’s Corporate Strategic Conference, they stated “we will go on the offensive and work to expand our sales in the mirrorless camera market“.

  • Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors
  • 3.0″ 1.04m-Dot Clear View II LCD Monitor

  • Expandable ISO 51200 and 10 fps Shooting

Update: I’m no longer sure all the sellers with a price below $1,100 are authorised Canon retailers (thanks William). Please check before buying. It’s still Amazon but the 7D2s may be grey import items.

Not sure what this means, if it is a mistake, or if it means something else.

However, Amazon US has the Canon EOS 7D Mark II on sale clearly below $1,100. Compare at $1,499 at other Canon retailers.

Might this mean the Canon EOS 7D Mark III is around the corner? Because in some way it looks like a clearance sale to me (update: it’s not).

Canon patent application for 18-185mm IS lens for APS-C PowerShot, 18-135mm IS for APS-C DSLR

Canon patent

Japanese site Hi Lows Note spotted two new Canon patent applications.

Patent application 2018-36364 describes a 18-185mm F/3.6-6.5 lens for compact cameras with an APS-C sensor, i.e. most likely a PowerShot compact camera (image on top). The lens appears to have image stabilisation.

  • Zoom ratio: 9.96
  • Focal length: 18.56 39.37 184.95
  • F no.: 3.61 5.11 6.49
  • Half image angle: 36.35 19.13 4.22
  • Image height: 13.66 13.66 13.66
  • Lens length: 110.65 121.29 164.53
  • Back focus: 8.65 10.60 12.43

The same patent literature also describes a 18-135mm F/3.6-6.5 lens for APS-C DSLRs (image at bottom). This lens too appears to have image stabilisation.

  • Zoom ratio: 7.40
  • Focal length: 17.98 28.29 133.11
  • F no.: 3.60 4.15 6.49

More Canon patent applications.

A patent application doesn’t mean the described technology will go into production soon. Some Canon patent applications which in our opinion might go into production:

Worth more than all rumors: Sony exec says Canon and Nikon will launch a FF mirrorless within a year

Canon Rumors

Among all the swirling rumors about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera, there is some lining on the horizon. And it comes no less than from Mr. Kenji Tanaka, Sony Senior General Manager of the Digital Imaging Business Group.

Interviewed by DPReview, Mr. Kenji Tanaka said:

This is just my personal opinion, but I think that maybe by next year’s CP+ you’ll see full-frame mirrorless cameras from Canon and Nikon. I think [by then] they will be participating in this market.

Just look at our technologies, like eye focus. All of that data comes from the imaging sensor. In DSLRs, the data comes from separate sensors. The main imaging sensor is blanked out, 90% of the time by the mirror. The sensor is turned off. But the imaging sensor is very important. So if cameras are going to develop, and be more able to capture the moment, manufacturers have to develop mirrorless technologies. So within one year, I think.

Well, folks, believe me: it means a Canon full frame mirrorless camera is coming (not that there is someone left having doubts about that). I’m pretty sure Sony has a close eye on anything the competition does.

Canon too clearly stated that they will go “on the offensive and work to expand our sales in the mirrorless camera market” (see this report too).

It’s coming folks. Stay tuned.

Canon wants 50% market share of interchangeable-lens camera market, goes on the offensive with mirrorless

canon

Thanks to our friend EdinaMN Guy for tipping us.

Canon posted documents from the company’s Corporate Strategy Conference. Not only the giant is alive and kicking, but there is a clear statement by CEO Fujio Mitarai about Canon’s plans with mirrorless, and with interchangeable-lens cameras in general (emphasis mine):

Within existing businesses, there are market areas that are growing, such as color devices in MFDs and laser printers, and mirrorless in cameras. In these segments, by launching differentiated products that only we can provide, we will stimulate the market, grow our sales, and secure additional market share. For example, in our core camera business, in addition to our overwhelming share of the DSLR market, we will go on the offensive and work to expand our sales in the mirrorless camera market, which is exhibiting remarkable growth. This will allow us to reach our goal of 50% market share of the entire interchangeable-lens camera market.

This is a clear statement. Canon is now taking mirrorless seriously (see this report too). Canon is already the leader in the camera market, aiming at 50% of market share of the entire interchangeable-lens market appears to be a move to challenge all of the competition, or to warn them what is going to happen in the near future.

The conference documents are available online:

I’m always interested in your opinion, so feel free to sound off in the comment section.

Yet another mention of Canon working on a full frame mirrorless camera

Canon Rumors

Last week it looked as if the world learned for the first time that Canon is working on a full frame mirrorless camera.

Big and smaller news outlets reported it, and made it look like a breaking news. Well, it’s not. People following CW knows that. We are reporting every bit we get about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera since 2014. And we got a lot of tidbits, suggestions, etc.

The latest about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera is a bit weird, and I have a hard time to take it seriously (it got a very low credibility ranking by its editors, indeed). However, according to the latest murmurings, Canon has a full frame mirrorless camera prototype out there (we heard this in the past), and this prototype is said to have a top down LCD (like the Leica SL), a flange distance that looks to short for the EF mount (so maybe it’s an EF-M mount?), a frame rate over 10fps, and was without any moniker or branding (on the camera body, which is normal for prototypes).

It’s always possible that Canon will put some new kind of camera on the market, but nothing here suggests this one may have a full frame sensor.

So, what do we know about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. Very little, to be honest. The only thing we can be sure is that there will be such a camera. There have been too many rumors in the past 3 years, and I think it’s a logical conclusion that, given the competition doing it, Canon will also sooner or later put a full frame mirrorless camera on the market. Since we are talking about Canon it may be more on the “later” side.

The following list sums up what we got so far:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor, resolution of 36-38MP
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • Canon might announce it before Photokina 2018, i.e. before September 2018.

I have some doubts about the suggested announcement date. If it was reliable, we probably would already have some new bits.

Stay tuned!
