canon patent

Another Canon patent for an interesting optical for mule, a EF 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6 lens for full-frame sensors. That’s a 20x zoom, and I can’t help but have to think about some compact, mirrorless full-frame camera :-)

  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • Expanded ISO 25600, Up to 7 fps Shooting
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC
  • RGB+IR 7560-Pixel Metering Sensor

Photographer and reviewer Dustin Abbott posted another one of his comprehensive reviews, this time it’s the Canon EOS 80D that gets scrutinized. And it ain’t no paper tiger, according to the reviewer.

In the conclusion he writes:

While there were a number of people that looked at the announcement of the 80D and said, “yawn”, I have yet to hear from anyone who has used the camera who didn’t love it. It is more camera in the field than it is on paper, and the key word that I and others are using of it is versatility. It just seems to be pretty much good at everything. It handles well, has great image quality, and is generally a joy to shoot with. The upgraded AF system makes it a viable competitor to the EOS 7D Mark II, though that camera should probably still be the ultimate choice for sports or wildlife shooters. But the Canon EOS 80D is the jack of all trades, good enough at everything to make many owners very happy.

You can watch the 17 minutes video-review below, or go for the written review (many sample pics).

There is a very good EOS 80D deal going on right now on eBay, check it out if you are interested.

The next video is particularly interesting. It analyses and compares the EOS 80D’s ISO extension and latitude, something we already knew the 80D was doing very good.

The video below compares the EOS 80D with the EOS 70D to see if the moire problem has been solved.

Canon U.S.A. Helps Empower Young Women Of Girls Inc. With “A Day At Canon”

Canon U.S.A. supports future generations of women in the community with educational event

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 17, 2016 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today hosted Girls Inc., a nonprofit organization that focuses on giving confidence to girls, for “A Day at Canon” at the Company’s corporate headquarters in Melville, NY.

“We are so grateful to Canon USA, Inc. for putting together this truly inspirational event for our girls” said Neela Lockel, executive director for Girls Inc. of Long Island. “The team prepared a wonderful day that left the girls excited and thinking about their own futures.”

Approximately 30 young women ages 15-18 across Long Island attended this all-day event specially designed to bring young girls together. They were presented with opportunities to learn about Canon, be inspired by women in the workforce today and visualize their personal future career paths, perhaps one day in the technology sector with Canon.

“Canon follows a Kyosei philosophy, which means, all people, regardless of race, religion, or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future”, said Christine Sedlacek, senior director of Digital Marketing Services Division, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are excited to have the opportunity to positively impact these young women and share our Kyosei philosophy in a tangible way within the local community.”

Girls Inc. guests were greeted with a Continental breakfast and received tours of the corporate showroom, showcasing some of Canon’s top product lines, such as Cinema EOS and Mixed Reality. Influential female employees of Canon U.S.A. across the IT, Product Marketing, Social Media, Legal and Finance departments met with the girls to educate them on their journey in the workforce and their experience with Canon U.S.A.

The young women of Girls Inc. participated in a series of workshops focusing on budgeting and career planning to give them tools to positively impact their career path. They also completed their own personal journey timelines outlining how far they have come to get where they are today. To close out the day, the girls printed out their journey timelines to bring home and leave by their workspace or pin to an inspiration board as an encouraging reminder.

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM ART (utterly unique lens)

Sigma 50-100mm F/1.8

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM ART at a glance:

  • Canon EF Mount/APS-C Format
  • 80-160mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Aperture Range: f/1.8 to f/16
  • One SLD and Three FLD Elements
  • One High-Refractive Index Element
  • Super Multi-Layer Coating
  • Hyper Sonic AF Motor
  • Internal Zoom and Focus; MF Override
  • Rounded 9-Blade Polycarbonate Diaphragm
  • Fixed, Rotating Tripod Collar

Photographer and reviewer Dustin Abbott published his comprehensive review of Sigma’s latest of their unique lenses, the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM ART for APS-C DSLR.

What makes this lens unique is the constant aperture f/1.8, same as on the also outstanding Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM. There are no other lens with such features.

The video above is the review, which can also be read and comes with many sample pictures. In the conclusion Abbott writes:

The Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM ART is an incredible lens. The image quality is seriously impressive, and this lens exhibited none of the focus woes I encountered with the 18-35mm. Not only is the resolution extremely high on the lens, but the overall look of the images it produces is extremely nice. The tradeoff is that you are going to have to deal with a uniquely large and heavy APS-C lens that is also unmatched in the weight department. My most serious gripe is with the poor implementation of the tripod collar, but I suspect that most users will adapt. I could wish for weather sealing or Sigma’s Optical Stabilizer, too, but the ART series has given me no reason to expect that. If your wrists can handle the weight, and your wallet can handle the hit ($1099 in the US), then I can think of no other serious reason why you wouldn’t want to own this lens.

Dustin Abbott also tested the Sigma 50-100mm on a full-frame body. Even if the lens is not meant for a FF body, it can never the less being mounted on such a body. The video below reveals the findings.
