[Rumor] EOS 1D-X Delayed Even Further?

The info comes from CR. Looks like the mysteries around the shipment date of Canon’s next professional flagship are entering a new round. After shipping has been delayed for eight (8) months. Among the possible causes the following have been discussed: […] blame being placed on battery approval in Japan, FCC approval in the United States, production issues with certain parts of the camera, serious firmware issues that had to be resolved […]. Canon doesn’t say a word about the reasons. A few days ago we reported that first production models of the EOS-1D X are shipped to selected professional photographers for Euro 2012 and the Summer Olympics. Now CR reports that the 1D-Xs shipped to these selected photographers are indeed pre-production models, not production ones. If this is true, then Canon may definitely have some serious issues to solve with the EOS 1D-X. The mystery continues…

For the time being the EOS 1D-X can be pre-ordered at Adorama (click here), B&H (click here), Amazon US (click here).

[Video] EOS 1D-X Used In Extreme Weather Conditions

This is sort of a “making of” of the movie Shattered, by Tyler Stableford. And it features the EOS-1D X, used in extreme weather conditions. The video above is part 1 (the idea is born), the video below is part 2 (putting the idea into motion), next one is part 3 (RAW footage editing). The very last video is the trailer of the movie, which was presented April 2012 at NAB Show in Las Vegas. Latest EOS 1D-X rumor here.

[Rumor] EOS 1D-X shipping to selected customers

Lot of Canon related rumors this month. Latest murmurs are telling that the EOS-1D X finally started shipping, but just to a selected few:

I’ve received good info that production samples of the Canon EOS-1D X have begun shipping to preselected lucky photographers. I’m told it’s for Euro 2012 and Olympic photographers, so they can get familiar with the camera.

The EOS-1D X is scheduled to ship in June 2012, for the rest of us.

Adobe Camera Raw 6.7 and DNG Converter 6.7 released

Both available for download. The following Canon cameras are supported in this release: Canon EOS 1D X, Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon PowerShot G1 X, Canon PowerShot S100V. To download the software check the following links:

About the DNG Converter:

The Adobe DNG Converter, a free utility that converts files from more than 350 cameras to DNG, enables you to easily convert camera-specific raw files to a more universal DNG raw file.

Digital Negative was developed to address the lack of an open standard for the proprietary and unique raw files created by each digital camera. DNG allows photographers to archive their raw camera files in a single format for easy cataloging and access in the future. With the format specification freely available, any developer can build software that supports and takes advantage of DNG. For more information, visit the Digital Negative page.

EOS-1D X and EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens, both delayed

Canon UK released a press release where it says that both the EOS-1D X and the new EF 24-70mm F2.8L will be delayed to June-July. No reason is given for the delay, except that there is a delay of the start of mass production. Canon USA confirmed the delay.

Updated sales start dates for the EOS-1D X and EF 24-70mm F2.8L II USM lens

London, UK, 12 April 2012 – Canon would like to advise of updated sales start dates for the previously announced EOS-1D X and EF 24-70mm F2.8L II USM lens, due to a delay to the start of mass production. EOS 1D X/5D Mark III video explains the AF system

I found a good >4min video about Canon’s new AF system on CPN’s site. The video is about the EOS 1D X, but since the 5D Mark III sports the same AF system what is told in the video applies also to the latter. Let me first sum up the AF system.

The Canon EOS-1D X and 5D Mark III DSLRs feature an advanced 61-point AF system. The new AF system delivers consistent focusing performance, independently from which kind of subject you are framing or from possible bad light sonditions you may encounter.

Mike Owen (European Professional Imaging Communications Manager) talks about the key features and advantages of the new 61-points AF system that comes with 41 cross-type sensors and five dual-cross type AF points for even more precision. There is also motorsport photographer Frits van Eldik in the film, talking about his first impressions with the new AF system: “The 61-point system on the EOS-1D X is so quick and accurate, and has AF points spread over a wide field, that it allows you to focus very accurately”.
