Canon Dominates World Press Photo Award

This is a pretty interesting infographic made by the people at hastalosmegapixeles. The graphic shows a breakdown of the cameras used for the World Press Photo 2014 awards, won by Canon photographer John Stanmeyer. Canon dominates.

58% of the cameras used are Canon cameras, 28% are Nikon cameras. Canon is prominent with the Canon EOS-1D X (8%), the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (7%), and even with the relatively old Canon EOS 5D Mark II (7%). No surprise here: Canon rules the professional photographers world.

Nice to see that an entry-level camera, the Canon Rebel T3/EOS 1100D, is also part of the game (1%). The original article (translated) claims that 86% of the winners used Canon gear, but I can not see it in the info graphic. Finally, there is still people using film (2%), and mirrorless cameras do not appear to play any role (3%), but some are using compact cameras (2%).

Canon EOS-1D X Firmware Update Article By Canon Digital Learning Center

[shoplink 4119]EOS-1D X Firmware[/shoplink]

Two weeks ago Canon released an important firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D X. This is a big update that brings improvements for auto-focus, exposure control, and more.

The Canon Digital Learning Center published a long and detailed article to explain all what you need to know about the firmware update. The highlights that come with the update:

  • Autofocus: improve low-light focus capability when tracking moving subjects in AI Servo AF
  • Autofocus: expanded range of Accel./Decel. Tracking settings toimprove AI Servo AF stability when focus-tracking subjects moving at a consistent speed.
  • AF point management: Orientation Linked AF adds a new option toregister only AF points rather than AF point plus area; Auto AF point selection in AI Servo can now start from the same AF point used last during Manual AF point selection.
  • Exposure control: Make Auto ISO even more viable (two important new changes), and a new option to maintain consistent manual exposure, even if aperture changes (such as if a tele extender is removed and shooting immediately begins after it’s removed)
  • Customization: New “back-button” options to instantly change AF characteristics on-the-fly

Why Did Scott Kelby Switch From Nikon to Canon (video)?

Long-time Nikon user Scott Kelby explains why he switched from Nikon to Canon 6 months ago.

Since lots of people asked Scott Kelby about the reasons for the switch, he decided to give an interview to Canon Explorer of Light Rick Sammon, addressing the questions he was asked.

The Canon DSLRs Scott Kelby switched to are the EOS 5D Mark III and the EOS-1D X. The video gives all the answers, but let me give you a spoiler: ergonomics, menu system, and skin tones are among the main reasons.

Canon Rumor: EOS 7D Mark II Announcement not Earlier than September 2013, May Have New Sensor, New Auto-Focus System

Canon Rumor

The Canon EOS 7D
B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA

Latest Canon EOS 7D Mark II rumor. It is said that Canon will not announce the successor of the highly popular, and 4 year old, Canon EOS 7D until the Canon EOS 70D starts to ship regularly. Moreover, if there is no sign of Nikon announcing a D400, it could be that Canon will further delay the announcement until early 2014. The EOS 7D Mark II sensor should have “additional functionality”, and could subsequently be featured on the whole Canon APS-C line-up. This gets me a little puzzled since Canon introduced a new and innovative sensor with the EOS 70D, and it could be hard to top this sensor’s functionality (especially if considering how conservative Canon is regarding the release of new technology).

The most interesting part of the rumour: the EOS 7D Mark II could introduce a new, more advanced Auto-Focus system, and the talk is not about life-view AF. This AF system is said to going to be featured also on the replacement of the Canon EOS-1D X, so it should be a very sophisticated AF system. If Canon will really feature an AF system advanced enough for the EOS-1D X successor on an APS-C DSLR is something I would take with a grain of salt. But then…
