Canon press release:

Canon U.S.A. Announces Canon Log Feature Upgrade for the EOS 5D Mark IV Camera

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 20, 2017 – In a move to help meet the demands of professional filmmakers, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the availability of a feature upgrade for the EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR camera that will add the ability to record with Canon Log. With this upgrade, the EOS 5D Mark IV can achieve a cinematic look similar to what can be achieved using Cinema EOS cameras, allowing it to serve as a second camera on a Cinema EOS shoot or to stand alone as a cinema camera. Current EOS 5D Mark IV camera owners can have the Canon Log feature upgrade installed for $99 at any of the Canon service centers across the U.S. starting in July. The camera will also be available for sale (body only) with the feature upgrade pre-installed starting in July, with an estimated retail price of $3,599.00*.
Canon Log uses the image sensor’s characteristics in a way that allows for a wide dynamic range, minimal loss of detail in shadows and highlight areas and an increased range of choices when color grading. Color grading options available with Canon Log include optimized color saturation, accurate colors with minor color bias, visual continuity and accurate skin tones.

Canon Log also works with and complements several EOS 5D Mark IV camera features including 4K shooting, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, high speed 119.9p shooting in HD and 59.94p shooting in Full HD. Additional features include Movie Servo AF allowing the camera to focus on a subject even when the shutter button is not used, the ability to register custom shooting modes in Canon Log and movie shooting in Canon Log on a compatible iOS® or Android™ device using the free Canon Camera Connect app1.

The EOS 5D Mark IV camera with Canon Log will be shown at the NAB show in Las Vegas, NV, April 24-27, in the Canon U.S.A., Inc. Booth #C4325 in the Central Hall of the LVCC. Follow Canon throughout the show on Instagram at @CanonUSA and Twitter at @CanonUSApro.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV firmware update 1.0.4 released today, but it’s not what we were waiting for

Eos 5d Mark V

Canon released firmware 1.0.4 for the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. It’s not the rumored update with the new 4K mode. This is a minor update with fixes. Download Canon EOS 5D Mark IV firmware 1.0.4 here.

Changes in the Firmware. Firmware Version 1.0.4 incorporates the following fixes and improvements:

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which a red-colored area may appear at the bottom-center of a captured image when shooting in bulb mode or during a long exposure.

2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the autofocus may not respond when the autofocus is initiated via pressing the shutter button, the AF-ON button or the AE lock button when configured in the custom control menu.

3. Enhances the reliability of communications between the camera and SD card.

4. Fixes incorrect wording on the Finnish language menu screen.

Firmware Version 1.0.4 is for cameras with firmware Version 1.0.3 or earlier. If your camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

When updating the firmware of your camera, please review the instructions thoroughly before you update the firmware.

The firmware update takes approximately 4 minutes.

The upcoming Canon EOS 5D Mark IV firmware update appears to change a few things in the EOS 5D Mark IV’s feature set. First ad foremost, the firmware update is said to add C-Log to the 5D4’s capabilities, which for sure will make happy a lot of videographers.

While firmware has not yet been released, this appears to be a big update. Some of the tweaks seem to need a modified heat sink. Existing EOS 5D Mark IV units do not have this new heat sink but can be retrofitted. Future models will have it.

The less, the changes coming with the firmware update have leaked over the web. Canon Rumors summed up what’s going to change, and what is not:

  • All video output will still be 8-bit.
  • Sampling for DCI 4K will be increased to a 5632 x 2970 pixel sensor area resulting in a 1.27x Crop factor.
  • Sampling for UHD will be from a 5472 x 3078 pixel sensor area resulting in a 1.29x Crop factor.
  • Both modes are accurately down-sampled to their final resolutions.
  • Existing frame rates will remain the same.
  • The current 1:1 4K sampling mode will remain an option for situations benefiting from the 1.78x Crop factor.
  • There will also be new full-sensor 3K modes added including 60fps and HDR 24fps.[…]
  • FullHD 1080p will also use this 3K full-sensor mode with down-sampling for a noticeable improvement in perceived resolution.
  • FullHD 1080p will also receive a modest frame rate boost to 72/75fps.
  • The EOS 5D Mark IV will gain the XF-AFC file format at 120Mbps (4:2:0) and 200Mbps (4:2:2). Both formats should require low enough data rates to accommodate UHS-I U3 type SD Cards.
  • Reports relating to a possible service job for the 5D Mark IV are the result of the heat sinks on current units not performing well in some environments when used with the newer firmware. […]
  • The newer firmware will still work in non-serviced cameras, but this may result in premature temperature warnings.

Stay tuned…
