Canon Europe posted an interview with the engineers who conceived and designed what is universally seen as the most exciting Canon lens of 2017, and as another optical masterpiece by Canon. The interview appears to be a slightly modified version of an interview posted December 2017 on Canon Asia’s Snapshot site (with more sample images).

The interview starts with Mr. Yamaguchi, Canon’s Product Planning Lead, next is Mr. Iwamoto, Canon’s Optical Design Lead, and finally Mr. Okuda, Canon’s Mechanical Design Lead.

Excerpt from the interview with Mr. Yamaguchi:

During the planning of the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM, we talked with many professional photographers, including wedding photographers, who would have many opportunities to use this lens. They told us that EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM is highly valued for its excellent expression and bokeh thanks to its large aperture. Being a heavy lens, however, it’s easy to get tired with extended use, and the autofocus speed is not necessarily satisfactory. Some said that even though it’s a large aperture single focal length lens, the addition of image stabilisation would allow worry-free shooting.

Excerpt from the interview with Mr. Iwamoto:

We focused on striking a balance between clarity of resolution for the centre of the screen that’s a feature of an L lens and the beautiful bokeh on the edges, ideal for popular portrait compositions with subjects in the centre of the frame, while taking realistic weight, size and cost into consideration.

[…]

In order to reduce the size of the entire lens, both the focus group and stabilising optical system must be lightweight and only move a small amount. For this lens, we used the following new optical arrangement from the front of the lens: the front group, the focus group, the diaphragm, the stabilisation optical system and the rear group.

Excerpt from the interview with Mr. Okuda:

Using highly durable ball bearings in the drive mechanism for this lens reduces load and improves resolution and accuracy. The use of ball bearings also contributes to high-speed autofocus. The heavy focus lens group must be driven with the limited power of the motor, but the focus lens can be driven quickly since the ball bearings reduce the load.

The interview comes with a lot of very interesting images of the interiors of the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS. Definitely worth to read. Read Canon Europe’s article “The craft behind the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM lens“.

85mm lenses showdown: Canon vs Sigma vs Tamron vs Zeiss

Canon EF 85mm F/1.4L IS

Photographer and reviewer Dustin Abbott compared four 85mm lenses: the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS (), Sigma 85mm f/1.4 ART (), Tamron 85mm f/1.8 VC (), and Zeiss Otus 1.4 ().

The showdown comes in two parts. Part one gives a detailed breakdown of the resolving power of four of the top 85mm options, part two gives a detailed breakdown of the rendering from each lens, including chromatic aberrations, bokeh quality, facial rendering, actual focal length, contrast, and more.

I consider Dustin one of the serious reviewers out there.

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is without any doubt the hottest Canon lens of 2017 and it gets one positive review after the other. We gave it a lot of coverage.

LensRentals’ Roger Cicala tested the new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS in his labs. This is not your typical lens review, this is the stuff geek dreams are made of.

From Roger’s conclusion:

[the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS]  is a lens where the designer has focused on being very good in as many situations as possible rather than obtaining the highest possible MTF. It’s apparently designed for the person who uses 85mm in a lot of different situations; especially in low light situations.

It’s very sharp, the field is designed to get good focus no matter where you focus, and all reports indicate that the focusing is quick and accurate. If you take a ton of shots, your keeper rate is going to be exceptionally high. And if you shoot in poor lighting with an 85mm it will be amazing compared to almost anything else available in Canon mount.

You can see all kind of test measures and tests, MTF, variance, field curvature, and more. The EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is compared to its main competitors. If you’re engineering inclined, love tech talk & stuff, or just want to know the most intimate secrets of Canon’s latest masterpiece, be sure to check Roger Cicala’s test results.

ePhotozine posted their full review of the new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS (price & specs). A lens that’s gathering a lot of attention, and many positive reviews for the right reason.

From ePhotozine’s conclusion:

Gorgeous and expensive, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM lens is [a] thing of beauty. There is no doubt that it performs superbly and produces exceptional images, efficiently and with outstanding ergonomics.

There are definite cost choices in that Canon offer a very low priced f/1.8 version, or, looking at the opposite argument, for only just under £200 more the f/1.2 comes into view.

Many may find it surprising that there has been a hole in the Canon range for this f/1.4 lens, which is certainly the classic offering for most other marques. It could be the perfect compromise between cost and speed, but in the end the choice will be a very personal one. What is quite certain is that the new Canon lens will not disappoint. Read the review…

The reviewer praises the excellent sharpness, low distortions and low CA, a great bokeh, fast and accurate AF. And all these goods come for a price, which is over $1,800.

As I wrote many times, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is the hottest Canon lens of 2017.

Canon Asia’s Snapshot site posted an interview with the engineers and developers who thought, designed and built the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS (price & specs).  The interview comes in two parts, part one is here and part two here. An excerpt from the interview:

When the product planning department requested development of this lens, our development department was initially stumped by the high degree of difficulty in the design. When equipping large aperture lenses with image stabilisation, the arrangement of the focus and image stabilisation groups is an important factor for determining the size and weight of the lens. Lenses with a small f-number (large aperture) characteristically have large diameter glass. The image stabilisation group, which is a part of the optical system, needs to be able to move to compensate for camera shake, which naturally makes the group heavy. An actuating force is also required to drive the group, and this further adds to the lens’ size and weight. Therefore, the development team’s first impression was that it would be almost impossible to develop the reasonably-sized, appealingly-priced 85mm f/1.4 lens with image stabilisation that the product planning department had requested.

Well, they managed to do it. This lens is a masterpiece. Kudos Canon!
