DPReview’s Chris and Jordan review what they think is the best and the worst gear of 2019.

Canon doesn’t score very well in Chris and Jordan’s hit lists. They classify the Canon Rebel SL3 as “worst camera of 2019”. At least the EOS R ranks first in the category “most improved camera via firmware”.

The Sony a7R IV is DPReview TV’s best camera of 2019, and the Panasonic S1H best hybrid camera of 2019. The Tamron 35mm f/1.4 is their best lens of 2019. And here is the video about best and worst gear of 2019:

Uh, does that mean something? According to data published by Map Camera there is no Canon camera among the top 10 cameras (new) sold in Japan in November 2019.

Map Camera posts sales figures for both new and used cameras.In the “new cameras” ranking the first Canon camera to rank, at position 12, is the EOS R. Other interesting fact: first and second ranked are both APS-C cameras.

Top 10 cameras sold in Japan:

  1. Sony α6600
  2. Nikon Z 50
  3. Sony α7 III
  4. Sigma fp
  5. Sony α9 II
  6. Fujifilm X-T3
  7. Sony α7R IV
  8. Fujifilm X-Pro3

Camera Market In Loss, CIPA March Report Suggests

The CIPA March 2019 report doesn’t draw a good picture of the camera market.

It’s in loss, as various execs in the industry have already stated, with the notable exception of Fujifilm (guess they are the only company with good reasons to be optimistic).

In their reports about the Q1 Financials, Canon sees smartphones as the major reason for the shrinking camera market. More and more people switch to a smartphone for their photography, and with phones having a sensor and the optical performance of the Huawei P30 Pro it’s understandable. The future is in computational photography, a domain where smartphone will have an advantage in the foreseeable future.
