Canon EOS-1D X Mark III Review

Forget BCN rankings and retailer top seller lists and other fanboyish fanciness. There is only one alpha dog in the global interchangeable-lens digital camera market, and it’s Canon. Period.

Canon press release:

Canon celebrates 18th consecutive year of No. 1 share of global interchangeable-lens digital camera market

TOKYO, March 29, 2021—Canon Inc. announced today that the company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 18 consecutive years1 from 2003 to 2020.

Canon develops the key imaging system components featured in its EOS series of digital interchangeable-lens cameras—CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses—under the core concept of, “Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality.” Putting together a wide-ranging product lineup—from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy high-image-quality shooting with easy operation, as well as a rich selection of 1182 combined RF and EF series lenses that make possible a wealth of creative expression—Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

During the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions) in September 2003. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. In October 2018, Canon announced the EOS R system—including the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera and RF lenses that fully leverage their optical technologies—that further expanded the range of imaging creativity and opened up new possibilities for visual expression. Over a long history beginning in the age of film, and with the support of loyal users, in 2019, the EOS series achieved the remarkable milestone of 100 million3 total EOS cameras sold.

In July 20204, Canon launched the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera, equipped with cutting-edge technology in pursuit of next-generation visual expression. In striving to further expand its lineup, Canon managed to secure the No. 1 share of the global market for the 18th consecutive year.

DECISIVE POWER. FASTER WORKFLOW. ABSOLUTE RELIABILITY: THE NEW NIKON D6 GIVES PROFESSIONALS THE EDGE WHEN IT MATTERS MOST

The New Nikon D6 Offers the Most Powerful AF System in Nikon’s History, and Continues the Brand Legacy of Professional Cameras That Deliver Connectivity, Dependability and Streamlined Workflow

Today, Nikon Canada Inc. has unveiled the D6, a new professional-grade DSLR built for those in need of extreme reliability and ultimate performance.  The D6 addresses the needs of professionals and press agencies, and is faster and more powerful than ever before. Offering the most powerful AF system in Nikon’s history, this flagship DSLR camera delivers crucial improvements to modern workflow while also accelerating file transfer capabilities. Promising unparalleled low-light performance, powerful agility, advanced 4K UHD multimedia capabilities and a mechanical shutter frame rate boosted to a staggering 14fps, the D6 will redefine the way pros work.

The Most Powerful AF in Nikon’s History: The D6 leaves nothing to chance. To maximize hit rate, it is equipped with a newly developed, densely packed 105-point AF system in which all the focus points utilize cross-type sensors and all points are selectable. Through the new focus point layout and the use of a triple-sensor arrangement for each focus point, the D6 achieves AF coverage that is approximately 1.6x denser than that of the D5. The D6 also sports an expanded focus detection range which increases the detection area for single point AF and dynamic area AF, making it easier to achieve focus on a subject even when slightly outside the focus point.

Improving upon Nikon’s popular Group AF mode, this function has evolved with support for 17 custom arrangements from which users can choose according to the scene or subject movement. The D6 also demonstrates superior low-light AF performance. The center focus point works down to -4.5 EV1 and the others to -4 EV, making autofocus possible even in dark situations or with low-contrast subjects.

Unparalleled Performance: The new EXPEED 6 engine’s superior image-processing capabilities combined with the vast amount of information provided by the new dedicated AF engine drives high-level performance in any situation. To help capture the decisive moment consistently, the D6 boasts a 14fps2 mechanical shutter with full AF and AE.  The D6 can also shoot completely silent for sensitive situations capturing full resolution at 10.5 fps. For faster frame rates, the Nikon D6 is able to take 2-megapixel images at approx. 60 fps and 8-megapixel images at 30 fps in Live View mode.

Canon EOS 90D Review (a good all-rounder, Photography Blog)

  • 220,000-Pixel AE Metering Sensor

Photography Blog reviewed Canon’s latest APS-C DSLR, the Canon EOS 90D.

They gave the EOS 90D a rating of 4.5/5. From their conclusion:

The Canon EOS 90D is a nice camera to use if you like the traditional styling and handling of a DSLR, while if you’re already equipped with a range of EF/EF-S lenses then it makes a lot of sense to make the 90D your next purchase.

In some ways it’s good to see that Canon still cares about its DSLR-audience, but we have suspicions that the 90D could be one of the last DSLRs to be announced by the camera giant, with the future being tilted towards more favourably towards mirrorless as time goes in. If you’re a traditionalist this could be one of your last chances to get hold of a DSLR as we know them today.

[…] the Canon EOS 90D is a great option for those who like DSLRs. Being a good all-rounder it’s good for those who shoot lots of different kinds of subject. It does well at sports and action, as well as being suited to landscape, portraits and pretty much any kind of subject you care to shoot. It’s also reasonably priced for what you get, so it comes highly recommended.

DPReview reviewed the new Canon EOS 90D, Canon’s latest APS-C DSLR.

They gave the EOS 90D a scoring of 85%. Here are some excerpts from their conclusion:

Canon’s latest enthusiast APS-C DSLR represents a solid leap forward in image quality for this line. The 90D, along with its mirrorless near-twin the EOS M6 II, both share what is at the time of publishing, the highest resolution APS-C sensor on the market. It offers outstanding Raw detail capture and noise performance, up there with other class-leaders like the Sony a6400. Canon JPEG color continues to be a favorite, but Canon’s default JPEG noise reduction continues to be overly aggressive – fortunately, this can be dialed down.

[…] Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus in live view […] is excellent, with great coverage and accuracy. Face and eye detect AF both work with good reliability, whether shooting stills or video.

[…] In terms of ergonomics, the 90D is excellent. Its large comfortable grip and sizable optical finder with 100% coverage are something that set it apart from its mirrorless APS-C competition. The body is also weather-sealed and well-built, with well-placed controls.

Seems Canon landed another winner here. I own the Canon EOS 80D, which happens to be my favourite camera for the time being, and to me it appears Canon managed to further improve the xxD line with the EOS 90D.
