Has The Canon EOS M6 Mark II Been Discontinued?

Canon Eos M6 Mark Ii Firmware Canon Rumor

A new and a bit weird rumor surfaced. Is the Canon EOS M6 Mark II set to be discontinued soon?

Reborn Canon Rumors suggests that Canon might soon discontinue the Canon EOS M6 Mark II. They write:

[…] reports from two different countries that the Canon EOS M6 Mark II has been discontinued. There will obviously be inventory in various stores around the globe.

With no rumoured successor, […] this may be the biggest sign yet that the EOS M system is going to be phased out in favour of an RF mount APS-C camera line.

The Canon EOS R7 will be a more “professional” design, but we fully expect Canon to announce an RF mount APS-C camera or two in the future with similar ergonomics as the EOS M series.

So, the EOS M6 II is going to get discontinued in favor of an APS-C sensor powered EOS R model. We still have plenty of doubts here. Any idea?

Canon EOS M6 Mark II Review (DPReview’s favorite Canon MILC so far)

Canon EOS M6 Mark II Review

Here is a Canon EOS M6 Mark II review by DPReview, and they call it their “favorite Canon mirrorless camera yet“.

From their conclusion:

The Canon EOS M6 II is a more overtly photographer-targeted camera than its predecessor, gaining Dial Func control, a dedicated MF/AF switch and an AF-On button which combine to put just a little more control directly at your fingertips. And it ends up giving a good degree of direct control without the sense that you need to completely configure the camera yourself.

[…] The camera’s autofocus isn’t quite a match for Sony’s a6400 and a6600, but it’s still very good and will adapt to a wide range of shooting with little effort.

[…] the M6 II is an excellent choice. It’s not the best in its class in every respect: the Sony a6400’s autofocus is better, the Fujifilm X-T30’s video is superior, as is its lens range, while the Nikon Z50 arguably has nicer ergonomics. But the M6 II does have the highest resolution of the bunch with excellent noise performance and dynamic range, and is otherwise competitive across the board. Above all, it’s engaging and enjoyable to shoot with.

Canon EOS M6 Mark II Review (delivers great-looking photos, ePHOTOzine)

Canon EOS M6 Mark II Review

Canon EOS M6 Mark II review by the folks at ePHOTOzine. The Canon EOS M6 Mark II was announced in August 2019.

The review criticises the fact that there are allegedly only three premium lenses for the EOS M system: the 32mm f/1.4 STM, 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM, and 22mm f/2 STM. All native EF-M lenses made by Canon, and with a metal mount, which seems to be a discerning factor for the reviewer.

It would be more correct to state there are only “three premium lenses made by Canon“, and still I think using the limited number of Canon-made EF-M lenses is objectionable as a criticism against the EOS M6 Mark II. There are many third party manufacturer making EF-M lenses, with some nice and fast primes among them. Or does someone doubt the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens is a premium lens? Depending by your needs you might prefer the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN. Both have a metal mount, btw. You can also use the very good EF/EF-S to EF-M adapter and not worry about autofocus since you have Dual Pixel AF on board. So, I guess in ePHOTOzine’s review there is a bit of good old EOS M bashing with the argument of the lens ecosystem. It’s true that Canon did not build a large EF-M lenses lineup (so far) but it’s also true that it doesn’t really matter that much.

From the Canon EOS M6 Mark II review conclusion:

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II could be a fantastic camera, in fact, it is, but without the right lens or lenses, it’s severely limited. It’s like a Ferrari stuck in traffic, or on a road with a 30mph speed limit until it gets to the Autobahn. Yes, the Canon EOS M6 Mark II is a great camera, but the first thing you must do is get a better lens, to get the most out of it, and does the currently limited range of Canon EF-M lenses meet or match your requirements?

Preliminary, Non Scientific Tests Suggest Canon’s New 32MP Sensor Improves On Dynamic Range

Canon Eos 90d Canon Aps-c Firmware Dynamic Range

It seems Canon’s claim they managed to improve dynamic range while raising the resolution of their latest APS-C sensor is not wrong.

Fred Miranda forum user cgarcia did some tests with sample images from DPReview to compare dynamic range figures of the new Canon EOS 90D (32MP) and the Canon EOS 80D (24MP).

Canon EOS 90D – ISO 100:

  • DR at 32MP: 12.468
  • DR at 8MP: 13.480 (+1.012)
  • read noise: 2.80125

Canon EOS 80D – ISO 100:

  • DR at 24MP: 12.435 EV
  • DR at 8MP: 13.2343 (+0.7993)
  • read noise: 2.86601

As you can see, there is a small improvement over the EOS 80D.

cgarcia also learned that the dynamic range improves much more at higher ISO settings (compared to the EOS 80D). The image below shows that a higher ISO settings the DR of the EOS 90D improves continously.

These figures look pretty good. However, keep in mind this is a non scientific test. To be sure we have to wait for further analysis of the performance of Canon’s new 32MP APS-C sensor. Never the less, it appears Canon managed to deliver a quite amazing image sensor.

Canon’s new 32MP APS-C sensor is featured on the brand new Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS M6 Mark II.
