Canon EOS R3 Review (incredible hybrid image stabilisation, Photography Blog)

A Canon EOS R3 review. There aren’t many out there. Maybe because few got a Canon EOS R3.

Canon EOS R3 at a glance:

  • 24MP Full-Frame Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, Eye Control AF
  • 6K60 Raw and 4K120 10-Bit Internal Video
  • 30 fps E. Shutter, 12 fps Mech. Shutter
  • 5.76m-Dot EVF with 120 fps Refresh Rate
  • 3.2″ 4.2m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • Sensor-Shift 5-Axis Image Stabilization
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Built-In Vert. Grip
  • CFexpress & SD UHS-II Memory Card Slots
  • Wired LAN and 5 GHz Wi-Fi Support

Photography Blog posted their full Canon EOS R3 review. From their conclusion:

[…] key advantages that the EOS R3 has over its DSLR sibling [the EOS-1D X Mark III, editor’s note] are the incredible hybrid image stabilisation worth up to 8-stops, superlative low-light AF sensitivity that stretches all the way down to -7.5EV, and the even faster headline-grabbing 30fps burst shooting, coupled with a completely silent electronic shutter.

This is all housed in a smaller, lighter yet still equally weather-proof and durable body that’s easier to use for extended periods of time.

There’s an awful lot to like about the EOS 3 and very little to grumble about. Sure, the integrated grip design certainly isn’t for everyone – at just over 1kg in weight it remains a camera for the professional rather than enthusiast, although we bet that many of the latter would enjoy using the R3, particularly if they routinely fit a battery grip to their current camera.

Dustin Abbott compares the Canon EOS R3 and the Sony Alpha 1. Among other things, design philosophy, autofocus and sensor performance are discussed. Enjoy.

A Parody Comparison: Sony a1 vs Nikon Z9 vs Canon EOS R3

eos r3

Here is a neat parody about the competition in the mirrorless market. It’s survival of the fittest: Sony a1, Nikon Z9 and Canon EOS R3.

The folks at DPReview TV made the little parody video below. Imagine…

A plane crash leaves the mirrorless flagships overexposed to the dynamic range of elements. Will Canon, Nikon & Sony come to their sensors and group together to weather the aberrations ahead, or will they cannibalize one another?

Which one will survive through hunger (battery), nighttime and the ever persistent menace of smartphones? See for yourself.

Canon EOS R3 Review (not a camera for everyone, D. Abbott)

Here it is: the Canon EOS R3 review I was waiting for.

Canon EOS R3 at a glance:

  • 24MP Full-Frame Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, Eye Control AF
  • 6K60 Raw and 4K120 10-Bit Internal Video

Dustin Abbott posted his Canon EOS R3 review along with his exhaustive findings. What I like in his reviews is that they are a balanced mix between lab testing and real world experience. Few reviewers get this mix right. From his conclusion:

[…] the EOS R3 is a crucial camera if Canon wants to get working professionals out of their DSLRs and into mirrorless…and all of those nice, shiny, expensive RF mount lenses.  The EOS R3 brings some genuine innovation to the 1D series design, including the Eye Control AF, in body image stabilization, and a faster burst rate than any 1D body has ever seen.  30FPS means that you have plenty of opportunities to choose the perfect frame.

If you put the EOS R3 and the Sony Alpha 1 together, the Sony looks like (by far) the cheaper camera even though it costs about $500 more. It is basically the same size as all of Sony’s other full frame mirrorless models, while the EOS R3 looks like the high end sports camera that it is.

[…] At the end of the day, however, this is not a camera for everyone. It’s too big, too heavy, and too expensive. It’s strengths are overkill for many photographers, and I doubt it will ever sell at the levels of cameras like the EOS R5 or R6.

As usual the review comes with a huge set of sample pictures, comparison charts, and all the information you might want to know. Dustin’s reviews are what I look for when I am about to purchase new gear. As usual Dustin Abbott also releases a complete video review. See below.

Canon EOS R3 DxOMarked: Best Low Light Performance Of Any FF Camera

canon eos r3 review canon cameras eos r1

The Canon EOS R3 underwent DxOMark’s testing, and scored a high point of 96. And it has the best low light performance of any full frame camera in their database.

Canon EOS R3 at a glance:

  • 24MP Full-Frame Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, Eye Control AF
  • 6K60 Raw and 4K120 10-Bit Internal Video
  • 30 fps E. Shutter, 12 fps Mech. Shutter
  • 5.76m-Dot EVF with 120 fps Refresh Rate
  • 3.2″ 4.2m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • Sensor-Shift 5-Axis Image Stabilization
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Built-In Vert. Grip
  • CFexpress & SD UHS-II Memory Card Slots
  • Wired LAN and 5 GHz Wi-Fi Support

The EOS R3 scores better than the Sony a9II:

The Canon EOS R3 achieved a high DXOMARK sensor score of 96, which puts it ahead in image quality of any previous Canon sensor in our rankings, even in advance of the EOS R5’s 45 MP sensor, albeit by just a tiny fraction (95). Image quality from the Canon EOS R3 is also ahead of its closest market rival, the 24 MP Sony A9II at 93 points in our sensor ‘ranking’.

Best Canon sensor so far, according to DxOMark’s tests. The Canon EOS R3 has…

[…] excellent dynamic range at key low, mid and high sensitivities, it has the best low light performance of any full-frame camera in our database. This makes the Canon EOS R3 a very attractive option for Canon EOS-1DX Mark III users transitioning over to Canon’s mirrorless RF system and it’s a solid option for any photographers new to the Canon brand.

You can download the Canon EOS R3 user manual from Canon. Or you might read it online. A technical brochure about the EOS R3 is available. You can watch the EOS R3 live-stream again here.
