We didn’t get the Canon EOS R3, despite all the rumors pointing to an imminent announcement. But despair not: here is a Canon EOS R5c rumor for you.

The EOS R5c would be the cinema/movie making version of the EOS R5. Rumor-wise the EOS R5c got little attention. Canon Rumors reports with confidence that the EOS R5c might get announced in Q1 2022. The rumor also suggests that the announcement was postponed after a scheduled October 2021 release.

While getting most of the features of the Canon EOS R5, the EOS R5c might also sport:

  • active cooling
  • slightly different form factor
  • more codecs for video recording
  • full-size HDMI port.

Still a long time to go for an announcement in Q1 2022. Stay tuned.

Here are the latest Canon rumors. It’s suggested a Cinema version of the EOS R5 might be released, and some new features will come via firmware update to the EOS R5, EOS R6, and EOS-1D X Mark III.

The source, Canon Rumors, seems to be pretty confident on both rumors, giving their highest rating.

The Canon EOS R5c, a Cinema version of the EOS R5

First, “R5c” is a name invented by the community, not an official Canon moniker. The new rumor suggests the EOS R5c will feature the same imaging sensor of the EOS R5 and also sport the same recording modes and options. There is, however, a noteworthy detail coming with the rumor: the EOS R5c will have a bigger body and active cooling (remember the overheating hysteria?). Despite it’s Cine destination, the EOS R5c will also be a hybrid camera still perfectly usable for stills photography. And it might have C-Log 2.

In the past we got some suggestions for this camera, the R5c. Some of what came with the latest rumor was already anticipated then:

  • same sensor technology as the EOS R5 but with half resolution
  • records 4K/120P with no crop
  • 2.8K supersampling in super35 mode
  • newly developed heat sink
  • Dual Pixel AF performance in low light better than EOS R5 and EOS R6.

Firmware updates for the EOS R5, EOS R6, EOS-1D X Mark III

Firmware updates for the Canon EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III are now ready to get released in the next weeks.

All three cameras will get C-Log 3 and new compression modes for 4K recording. For the Canon EOS R5 and EOS-1D X Mark III also expect a Cinema RAW Light feature. The EOS R5 will likely also get 1080p @120fps video recording. Most likely the new firmware version are already actively tested by selected photographers.

Here is a follow up to the rumor about two possible upcoming EOS R cameras, the EOS R5s and EOS R5c.

The same source contacted us again (thanks a lot) and suggested the resolution of the EOS R5c (or, unlikely, EOS R3c) might be around 11.25MP. The resolution of the EOS R5s (or, unlikely, EOS R3s) should be around 80MP, which is already rumored since a while.

Is a video-oriented EOS R camera with 11MP something plausible? It might, in our humble opinion. Still, we recommend to keep the salt ready for this rumor.

We expect Canon to release two Cinema cameras with RF mount on September 24, 2020.

We got a rumor from a new source about a possible Canon EOS R5C (or R3C) video camera and a Canon EOS R5S (or R3S) camera with a high resolution sensor.

The Canon EOS R5C/R3C and the EOS R5S/R3S are said to share the same camera body form factor. Here is what else got suggested:

  • R5C/R3C has the same sensor technology as the EOS R5 but with half resolution
  • R5C/R3C records 4K/120P with no crop
  • R5C/R3C does 2.8K supersampling in super35 mode
  • Both have a newly developed heat sink
  • R5S/R3S has “double-width resolution sensor of EOS R6“
  • R5S/R3S does 12fps
  • Dual Pixel AF performance in low light better than EOS R5 and EOS R6.
  • R5S/R3S “high resolution monster being hybrid for quality and speed“

To be honest we have some doubts about this rumor. Besides the moniker uncertainty there is more that makes us wonder. Even if something might have got lost in translation, we wonder what “double-width resolution” exactly means.
