Canon EOS R6 DxOMarked, Scores One Point Less Than EOS 5D IV and EOS-1D X III

canon eos r6 manual

The Canon EOS R6 underwent DxOMark’s sensor benchmarks, and gets a score like the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS 5D Mark IV (both 91).

The Canon EOS R6 scored 90 at DxOMark’s test. The Canon EOS R6 sensor is based on the imaging sensor featured in the EOS-1D X Mark III, and it shows its heritage. The sensor is also behind Sony’s.

From DxOMark’s conclusion:

Canon’s decision to launch the EOS R6 alongside the more intriguing EOS R5 may have kept the former out of the limelight somewhat, but it’s a highly capable camera with competitive specifications. Its body stabilization, super-fast burst rates, solid video specs, and useful dual-pixel AF II all add up to a very well-rounded offering.

While the 20 MP sensor may seem an odd choice, this is a variant of the one found in the flagship EOS-1D X Mark III, and the results are practically identical. It performs well across the board with excellent dynamic range at all ISOs. Add to that the sensor’s good color and low noise, and the Canon EOS R6 looks set to be a firm favorite among a wide range of photographers who work across many different genres.

Canon EOS R6 Review (fabulous autofocus system, D. Abbott)

canon eos r6 review

Here is a Canon EOS R6 review. More Canon EOS R6 reviews are listed here.

Dustin Abbott posted his full Canon EOS R6 review. As usual with his reviews, it comes with a huge set of sample pictures, comparison charts, ISO tests, differences and things in common with the EOS R5, and all the information you might want to know. This is the review I would look for if I was looking to get the EOS R6.

Some excerpts from the review:

[…] the Canon EOS R6 is also a very compelling model that leverages a lot of the technological strengths both of the Canon 1Dx MKIII and the EOS R5 into a fairly complete package at a much lower price point.

[…] the choice to utilize the very competent 20.1MP sensor from the 1Dx MK III was a sound one. I vastly prefer it to the 24MP one found on the RP. The sensor showed a superior high ISO performance, good dynamic range, and, also always, very pleasing Canon colors.

[…] The IBIS system works well, the ergonomics are excellent, but while these are both superior to the competition, the true greatest advantage has to be in the fabulous autofocus system and deep buffers.  This is a sporting camera to rival the a9’s and 1D’s of the world in many ways, capable of brilliantly tracking and capturing fast action.

Next Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 Firmware Might Eventually Bring 1080p/120fps Video

Canon firmware EOS R6 firmware

The last Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 firmware update was not what many were expecting. 1080p video at 120fps is rumored again, for the next firmware update.

Not sure if 1080p at 120fps is leaned more on the “wishful thinking” side or if it will really be implemented in a future firmware update. We think the chances are good the rumor is reliable. However, for the time being it’s murmured the the next EOS R5 and EOS R6 firmware update will deliver:

  • Canon Cinema RAW light addition
  • C-Log 3
  • 1080p @ 120fps

When can we expect to see this firmware update? Most likely somewhen between January and April 2021.

Stay tuned.
