Is the Canon EOS M3 coming to the USA? [CW2]

EOS M3

We (thanks) and others got word that Canon may introduce the EOS M3 to the US market.

I do not think this will happen. It happens rarely that big companies change their global marketing strategies after the introduction of a product. Still, the reasons for not selling the M3 on the US market are hidden to me. This has probably have to do with the fact that mirrorless system sales are struggling in the States, and with the huge marketing flop the EOS M was. Btw, the first EOS M was available in the USA.

If you live in the USA you can still get the EOS M3 without having to rely on dubious eBay sellers. DigitalRev sells the EOS M3 and ships internationally.

Canon EF-M 85mm f/1.8 IS STM around the corner? [CW1]

eos m3
Canon EOS M3

A lot of us think that Canon will push the EOS M system after the announcement of the Canon EOS M3. What to some degree is missing are native lenses for the system (though you can use any Canon EF and EF-S lens thru the adapter).

That’s where this rumor perfectly fits. The rumor suggest that a Canon EF-M 85mm f/1.8 IS STM lens may be around the the corner. I am just wondering if a 85mm lens is the most urgent thing to release to push the EOS M system. Other focal lengths would be more appreciated, and also more useful for the EOS M system.

What we heard (here at CW) is that Canon will announce a new EF-M 18-55mm IS STM kit lens, to pair with the new EOS M3. I have no candidate announcement date for the new EF-M 18-55mm IS STM lens, but if the rumor is reliable then an announcement in Q4 2015 could be plausible. Canon would be in time to bundle the new kit lens with the EOS M3, ready for X-Mas sales.

About our rumour rating:

  • CW1 – probably fake rumor, not reliable (less than 15% chance to be real)
  • CW2 – rumor from an unknown/new source, but otherwise at least a plausible rumor (15%-40% chance to be real)
  • CW3 – around 50% chance to be real, coming from a known source, or from new source with good insight in Canon’s business
  • CW4 – rumor from a known source that was right in the past, high probability to be true (60%-80% chance to be real)
  • CW5 – as good as certain to be true

Canon EOS M3 review (much faster AF, excellent image quality)

Canon eos m3

Photography Blog reviewed the Canon EOS M3. In the conclusion:

[…] the EOS M3 is […] a good camera, and if you already have a number of EOS lenses, it’s a logical choice if you want to reduced the size of the overall system. With the addition of a much faster AF system, control and exposure compensation dials, bigger handgrip and a tilting LCD screen, more experienced photographers will find much to like. It really does need an integrated viewfinder, though – the days of buying an expensive EVF that takes up the flash hotshoe are long gone when all of the EOS M3’s principal rivals have one built-in, in a similar body size and at the same price-point. In terms of image quality, the EOS M3 happily fits the bill, with the new 24.2 megapixel sensor delivering very pleasing images throughout the ISO range.

As usual with EOS M3 reviews, the lack of native lenses is criticised. Read the full review at Photography Blog.

Canon EOS M3 review (improved AF, excellent image quality, ephotozine)

Canon EOS M3

ephotozine posted their review of the Canon EOS M3. As all other reviews so far, the lack of native lenses is highlighted. In the conclusion they write:

As a camera (and if you ignore the lack of native lenses) the Canon EOS M3 deliver high image quality, with good noise performance up to and including ISO6400, and the camera has siginificantly improved focus performance, making it almost as quick as other mirrorless cameras, and quicker than some. Images have excellent colour and exposure, and look good on the tilting 3 inch touch-screen. For a Canon user with a number of EF lenses, then the EOS M3 would make an excellent companion to another DSLR, letting you use your favourite lenses with a smaller camera body. However, the EOS M3 will look much more apealling, if and when the price comes down to a level more in line with the competition.

A good review for those who want to learn more about Canon’s third mirrorless camera. To see all our EOS M3 coverage click here.

Canon EOS M3 review (What Digital Camera)

wpid-eos_m3_black_f002.jpg

What Digital Camera posted their review of the Canon EOS M3. In the conclusion:

There’s no denying that the EOS M3 is a huge improvement on the original EOS M1. To begin with it’s compact and impressively well made, with a control layout that makes it a pleasure to use.

[…] The camera’s autofocus speed is a huge improvement on its predecessor, although it does still lag some way behind notable competitors.

Image quality is also improved, with the new sensor delivering some impressive results including a huge amount of detail and low noise at lower ISO settings.

There are areas in which the new camera is still lacking, however. Notably, the relatively slow burst mode and small buffer make the M3 feel a bit dated […]
