Canon Powershot SX70 HS Review (ePhotozine)

Powershot SX70

ePhotozine reviewed the Canon Powershot SX70 HS, and they are not very fond of it. From the conclusion:

The Canon Powershot SX70 HS is an update to the SX60, adding 4K video, and increasing the price. This makes it competitive with other cameras, such as the Panasonic Lumix FZ82, or Nikon Coolpix B700, in terms of features, but for some reason, the Canon is almost double the price. Due to this, you’ve got to be a big Canon fan to justify the purchase of this camera. We found the camera frustrating at times due to focusing issues to do with the shutter release button, and we also missed shots at times due to focus.

With 4K UHD video recording and a microphone socket, the camera may be appealing to those who want video recording with a lot of zoom. For everyone else, we’d probably just get the FZ82, it’s practically half the price. If the price of the SX70 HS drops substantially then it could be an option to look at. Read the review…

The price for the Canon Powershot SX70 HS will most likely drop within the next 6 months.

Hackers enjoy. Canon is releasing a new version of its Software Development Kit (SDK) and Application Programming Interface (API) for selected cameras. The first camera to be supported will be the PowerShot SX70 HS. The EOS Digital SDK is already available for download.

Press release:

London, UK, Wednesday 2nd January 2019 — Canon Europe, a world leader in digital imaging solutions, announces the release of its new camera API package, offering a range of resources to developers. The combined EOS Digital software development kit (SDK) and all-new Camera Control API (CCAPI) create unique opportunities for developers and software engineers to take advantage of select Canon cameras and lenses, launching with the PowerShot SX70 HS.

Many developers have already benefited from Canon SDKs, enabling them to integrate Canon cameras and lenses in their solutions and control them remotely, wired via USB. Such applications include photo booths, robotic / automated units, event photography and recording, mass portrait / passport and photogrammetry systems.

Photography Blog reviewed the Canon PowerShot SX70 HS.

The new Canon PowerShot SX70 HS is something of a mixed bag overall – it takes a few steps forward in terms of the features that it offers, but one big step backwards in image quality.

We praised the SX60 HS for its excellent image quality, but unfortunately the same can’t be said for the new SX70 HS. The new 20 megapixel sensor is just too noisy, even at base ISO 100, with the camera effectively offering a usable range of just 100-400 before fine detail gets obliterated. This is only made worse by the camera’s massive zoom range, which demands that use the higher ISO speeds in anything but good light to help keep shutter speeds fast enough to avoid camera shake. As most people buying this camera will be doing so for the massive zoom lens, they’re only going to be disappointed when looking close-up at their zoomed-in shots.

They also have good things to say, read the review here.
