Canon U.S.A. Selected By City Of Arlington To Outfit Largest Esports Stadium In United States

Go Canon, you guys rock! Press release:

MELVILLE, NY, January 23, 2019 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that its state-of-the-art broadcast lenses will be capturing the action at Esports Stadium Arlington in Arlington, Texas—the country’s largest esports stadium. To outfit the stadium’s 4K UHD broadcast cameras, the City of Arlington purchased three Canon UHD-DIGISUPER 66 4K UHD field box lenses, four CJ24ex7.5B 4K UHD telephoto zoom lenses and one CJ14ex4.3B 4K UHD wide angle zoom lens.

Located in the heart of Arlington’s Entertainment District, Esports Stadium Arlington is a $10 million, 100,000 square-foot facility built to serve the unique and technologically advanced demands of the esports industry. Designed by award-winning architectural firm Populous and brought to life with build partner Shawmut Design and Construction, the stadium features a competition space with a built-in 85 foot-long, LED wall accompanied by an immersive sound and theatrical lighting system.

Providing 4K optical performance for cameras that feature 2/3-inch sensors, the UHD-DIGISUPER 66 mid-range telephoto zoom lens features a 66x zoom ratio, making it ideal for sports and live-event productions. Leveraging Canon’s Optical Shift Image Stabilizer (Shift-IS), this lens provides both handling and operational controls similar to existing field-zoom lenses for HDTV broadcast cameras, offering stable imaging and comfortable maneuverability during indoor and outdoor sports broadcasting.

“Canon’s ability to supply lenses that met our 4K visual needs, budget constraints, support and time requirements helped us succeed in building this industry-changing facility,” says Corey Dunn, Executive Producer with NGAGE Esports, who oversaw all operations and production for Esports Stadium Arlington. “Working with Canon has been great and has afforded us the maximum flexibility for a facility of this size.”

The City of Arlington also purchased four CJ24ex7.5B 4K UHD telephoto zoom lenses and one CJ14ex4.3B 4K UHD wide angle zoom lens, notable for their compact size and low weight, supporting high-mobility shooting often involved in sports-entertainment production. All the lenses, which are being paired with Grass Valley cameras, will enhance current HDTV optical-imaging performance, while solidifying a place for the shift to 4K production.

“We chose Canon’s broadcast lenses not only for their superb 4K optical quality, but for the Company’s leading service and support offerings,” said Marc Scarpa, founder and executive producer of Simplynew, the systems integrator for the stadium. “This is more than an one-time equipment purchase—it’s the start of a new relationship with Canon as we look to shape the future of esports.”

Will Canon Ever Regain Their Dignity, And Become King Again? (Humor)

The folks at Canon Conspiracies ask the fundamental question: Can Canon become king again?

Canon cripples their cameras, and they’re going to have to stop doing that if they want to compete in 2019. The competition is rising, Olympus EM1X is a beast, Sony coming with the a7siii and a7000, Fuji with their XT3 and XH2. Canon can’t play around, their next RF system camera needs to compete.

This Miniature Model Of The Canon EOS M50 Has Interchangeable Lenses, Blinks And Beeps

If you are looking for a miniature model of the Canon EOS M50 (Kiss M in Japan) we got you covered.

The “Canon EOS Kiss M Flash & Sound Mini Collection” is a 1:2.5 scaled model of Canon’s best selling mirrorless camera, the EOS M50. The model is made by Takara Tomy Arts and according to DC Watch it was made under the strict supervision of Canon.

You can even change lenses on the miniature model. It’s not taking pictures, obviously, but there is a led under the flash shoe that blinks, and the model does a shutter sound when activated. For whatever reason you can also fix it on the flash shoe of your real Canon camera.

Rakuten has this little toy on sale.

Canon Empowers the Future as a Top U.S. Patent Recipient and Innovative Leader

Company Also Rises to Secure Second Place in New Ultimate Patent Ownership Analysis

Press release:

MELVILLE, NY, January 15, 2019 – Ranking third in the number of U.S. patents awarded in 2018, Canon Inc., the parent company to Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, proves it continues to empower future leaders with new and innovative technology solutions. While overall number of U.S. patents awarded is down, according to results issued by the leading producer of global patent databases IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, Canon maintained its standing in the top five spots by being awarded a total of 3,056 patents in 2018.

This marks the 33rd consecutive year that Canon ranked in the top five for number of U.S. patents awarded and the 14th consecutive year that Canon was the top recipient of U.S. patents among Japanese companies.

Additionally, and new this year to IFI’s patent analysis, Canon ranks second in Ultimate Patent Ownership. This separate analysis tabulates the world’s largest current patent holders, which includes parent companies and their subsidiaries. Unlike IFI’s annual Top U.S. Patent Recipients*, the broader ranking measures the size of a patent owner’s global portfolio based on the number of active patent families around the world covering a single invention. Canon secured the second spot, outranking IBM, with 34,905 active patent families.

“The secret to the success behind Canon is that it is always reinventing its approach to innovation, as evident through our continually high rankings in the IFI’s annual patent reports,” says Seymour Liebman, executive vice president, chief administrative officer, and general counsel, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The IFI’s new patent analysis is further testament to that fact. We are proud of our strong standing among fellow tech giants and look forward to the future, as we continue to break molds and reimagine the impossible.”

This patent news also comes on the heels of Canon’s innovation showcase at CES 2019 where the Company joined forces with likeminded innovators in its booth to “Empower the Future” through its technology integrations in manufacturing, retail, sports, entertainment, and experiential marketing solutions.

Canon Dominates DSLR, Mirrorless and Lens Market In Japan

mirrorless

BCN posted their annual “BCN Awards” and look who is ranked on top for the mirrorless and DSLR market. It appears to be true that there is life in the old dog.

Canon ranks first for DSLR and mirrorless market shares in 2018.

DSLR market shares:

  1. Canon – 57.4% share
  2. Nikon – 39.3% share
  3. Ricoh – 3.1% share

Mirrorless market share:

  1. Canon – 31.6% share
  2. Olympus – 23.5% share
  3. Sony – 22.7% share

Canon’s success in the mirrorless market is mostly because of the commercial success of the EOS M50, and also to some minor degree thanks to the new EOS R. It’s interesting to see that Nikon doesn’t show up among the first three players in the MILC market. Surprisingly the so much touted Sony mirrorless systems are not getting that much love in Japan.

Nikon still ranks first for compact cameras with 31.5%, followed by Canon with 29.8% and Sony with 11.9%.

Canon also ranks first for sold lenses with 20.7%, followed by Sigma with 15.7% and Nikon with 13.7%.

Below you see how Canon’s market share in the mirrorless market evolved since 2016.

Not bad for a company so heavily criticised. I’m curios to know how much market share Canon will gain this year because they are clearly headed to lead the market.
