Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) 4.0.1 Available For Download

 Digital Photo Professional
The new Canon DPP 4.x

The version 4.0.1 of Canon’s Digital Photo Professional is available since 8/7 but I totally missed it. A minor upgrade with bug fixes.

Fixes a phenomenon in which when a recipe for other images is applied to images that do not support lens aberration compensation, there are cases that these images can no longer be correctly displayed.

DPP 4.0.1 can be downloaded here.

A note. DPP 4 officially supports only Canon’s latest full-frame cameras (EOS-1D X, EOS-1D C, EOS 5D Mark III, EOS 6D). Canon announced that support for more cameras will be added in the future. In the meantime, you can use DPP 4.x  on other cameras by applying this simple trick. RAW files from the following DSLRs can then be processed with DPP 4.x: Rebel SL1/EOS 100D, Rebel T4i/650D, EOS M, EOS 70D, Rebel T5i/EOS 700D.

Most Canon EOS 7D Underwater Housing Are Discontinued

Canon EOS 7D

I always love to hear from the underwater photography community (thanks SevetS). I was myself a scuba diver a long time ago (when it was very expensive to shot underwater)

One more sign that the EOS 7D replacement is coming very soon. Several retailers have discontinued EOS 7D underwater housings. Check it for yourself:

Samyang Announces 50mm T1.5 and 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lenses

Samyang

Now it’s official. Samyang (aka Rokinon and more brands) announced 2 new 50mm lenses, a VDSLR lens – the 50mm T1.5 AS UMC Cine lens – and a conventional lens, the 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC.

Samyang press release:

Samyang announces the release of a new cine lens V-DSLR 50mm T1.5 AS UMC. The product will be officially introduced during upcoming Photokina 2014 photographic fairs in Cologne.

The presented lens with the focal length of 50mm is yet another product released by the Korean manufacturer. And it will perfectly fill the gap between Samyang 35mm and 85mm models. Cine version will be introduced along with the photographic version of the lens. As a result, Samyang brand will now be selling a complete set of bright lenses with exceptionally wide and useful focus ranges to meet expectation of both filmmakers and photographers.

Samyang 50 mm T1.5 AS UMC has been designed for cameras and camcorders fitted with photosensitive 24x36mm or smaller sensor. It gives 46.2 degrees field of view, and thanks to high brightness value of T1.5 (f/1.4) it comes as a great tool in poor lighting conditions, ensuring splendid image quality and small depth of field. Optics of the lens consists of nine lens elements arranged in six groups (including one aspherical and one hybrid aspherical lens element). To ensure high contrast and faithful colour reproduction, all lens elements have been covered with multi-layered UMC anti-reflective coatings.

Samyang 50mm T1.5 VDSLR ensures exceptionally smooth and aesthetic mapping for out of focus areas beyond the focal plain, producing the so called bokeh effect. Thanks to the eight-bladed aperture, the subjects located outside the depth of field are shown with extremely smooth features. This feature will be appreciated by professional filmmakers and photographers taking portrait photos.

New Samyang 50mm T1.5 VDSLR will be first presented at Photokina 2014 photographic fairs. Samyang company invites all guests to visit the company’s stand (No. A-025, hall 2.1) during the fairs which are to be held in Cologne from 16th to 21st of September 2014. For all those who want to visit Photokina 2014 fairs, Samyang has prepared free guest passes. Please, visit our official website www.samyang-europe.com or the company’s fanpages in socialnetworking services to view the upcoming information about our free guest passes: facebook.com/samyang.

Migrate From Aperture To Lightroom

Adobe is working on a tool to make the transition from the soon to be no longer supported Apple Aperture to Adobe Lightroom 5 smooth and hazzle-free. In the meantime they published a step by step guide on how to manually migrate your precious photo catalog and pics from Aperture to Lightroom.

Adobe is developing a migration tool to bring your photos into Adobe Photoshop Lightroom from Aperture, but if you’re eager to switch before the tool is ready, this guide helps ease your transition. We recognize that this migration can be a challenging process. The following resources and methodology to help get you up to speed with Lightroom and provide a roadmap for successfully migrating your photos.

Adobe is pushing their cloud service, the Creative Cloud Photography plan (again available for $9.99/month), to attract new customers. The plan comes with Photoshop and Lightroom. However, the upcoming tools as well as the how-to apply also to the stand-alone Lightroom 5 version.

Interview With Yoshiaki Sugiyama, The Man Behind The EOS-1 DSLRs

EOS-1 DSLRs

Canon Professional Network Europe published a long interview with Mr. Yoshiaki Sugiyama, the engineer that worked on the design oc Canon’s SLR systems since 1978, up to the EOS-1 series (introduced in 1989).

From the interview:

CPN: What do you see as the future for EOS camera design encompassing? For example, can cameras get smaller and even easier to use? If so, how might this be achieved?

YS: “I previously said that I believe the optimum size among Canon cameras is the AL-1. I believe that the trend towards compact, lightweight equipment is a certainty among categories encompassed by advanced amateurs, and even professional equipment, [so] the entire [EOS] system will move toward a more lightweight form.

The technical challenges are: lighter, stronger materials; glass materials with a high refractive index and high permeability; improvement in low power consumption design and compact, high-capacity battery; electronic parts with a higher degree of integration.”
