Canon Silently Teases The Upcoming 8K Video Camera

8k video

In a very quiet and untypical move, Canon released a teaser video for its upcoming 8K video camera.

Canon Japan released a new video with information about the 8K camera, which according to our sources is already undergoing field testing. The 12 minutes video features interviews with Japanese camera operators and filmmakers.

In the video the 8K camera is described to form factor very similar to the EOS C300, and is operated in the same way. To get the benefits of 8K recording you need also an “8K Conversion Box”. While the camera is shown in the video, unfortunately no specifications are revealed.

The Canon 65mm f/0.75 Was Made For X-RAY Machines, And This Guy Shot A Video With It

Canon 65mm f/0.75

I have to admit I never heard of the Canon 65mm f/0.75 lens, made for X-Ray machines. It’s a very rare lens, and one of the fastest ever built.

Mathieu Stern adapted the Canon 65mm f/0.75 to a Sony mirrorless camera, and shot a short video entirely at f/0.75. Wait for “The Witch” to start to see an f/0.75 lens used for video.

Below you can see a photo shot with the Canon 65mm lens.

Must be a challenge to properly focus with f/0.75. More images shot with the 65mm f/0.75 can be seen on his website and Instagram.

Canon also made a 50mm f/0.75 lens for X-Ray machines. If you are interested in more exotic lenses, have a look at Mathieu Stern’s online ‘Weird Lenses Museum‘.

Possible Supply Shortage For Canon (and others) After Fire Hits Circuit Manufacturer

canon rumors canon full frame mirrorless

The global pandemic already affected the supply chains of camera manufacturers (the EOS R5 announcement was delayed many times). Now a massive fire at a Japanese chip manufacturers might have made things worse.

A three-day fire broke out on October 20 at the AKM Semiconductor factory in Japan. AKM supplies most Japanese camera manufacturers. Inside Imaging reports that

AKM is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of large-scale integrated circuits (LSIs), including digital-to-analog converters (DACs), analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), as well as other components used in the manufacture of  consumer and professional products in the audio and appliance industries.

While it’s not clear at time of writing exactly which components camera manufacturers are sourcing from AKM, the factory made ADC chips which take analog audio from a microphone and converts it to the digital signal that a camera records when shooting video. Just as smartphones are now cameras, cameras are increasingly becoming sophisticated, broadcast-quality audio recording devices, and the connection with a supplier like AKM is by no means peripheral.

The fire destroyed the factory, which won’t be back in production for at least six months and perhaps as long as one year, according to reports.

The fire affects Nikon and Sony too, apparently. Insider Imaging’s article, which is dated 11/24, ends stating that they have been told:

that Canon, Nikon and Sony have already pulled back support for Black Friday promotions ‘as there will be a shortage of stock due to fire in (the) Japan factory,’ according to the source.

So, I didn’t notice or hear of any pulled back support for Black Friday. More information about the fire at AKM can be found here.
