First Serious Test Shows There Is No Canon EOS R5 Overheating Issue

canon eos r5 overheating

If you buy a car that’s stated to make 600 miles with a tank of gas and doesn’t go as far as, let’s say, 900 miles, are you then saying this car has a distance issue?

Most likely you would not, and most likely you would consider it nothing but a joke even talking about a distance issue. So why does the Canon EOS R5 have an overheating issue when its mileage is exactly as described by Canon?

As you’ll see, the Canon EOS R5 has no overheating issue. It gets hot, very hot, because computing and storing 4K and 8K footage produces a lot of heat. Nevertheless, you can’t say there is an issue if the measured figures compare with those declared by Canon. A first test from a reviewer we consider to be serious, shows that there is no Canon EOS R5 overheating issue as suggested by some folks.

Gerald Undone published his test results on Twitter, and the recording times he got are very close to those stated by Canon. Below you see first Gerald Undone’s results and then Canon’s documented recording times for different video modes.

Gerald Undone’s tested recording times

As you can see, the Canon EOS R5 behaves as advertised and documented in the user manual. Gerald also reports that a full recovery from heat, in order to get the tested recording times again, is of 2 hours for 100% and 1 hour for 60%. Gosh this little camera gets hot!

Sadly, now some people is even suggesting that Canon has delayed the EOS R5 and might recall it because of the “overheating issue“. Utterly crap. Canon USA released a statement to address these fantasies.

I’m eager to see more serious Canon EOS R5 tests done by serious people.

Canon EOS R5 Review (best IBIS tested on FF camera, DPReview)

canon eos r5 review

DPReview TV posted their Canon EOS R5 review. They say its IBIS system is the best they “played along with” on a full frame camera.

The reviewers are rather fond of the Canon EOS R5 and its many innovative features. They obviously also talk about the much discussed overheating on the Canon EOS R5. as far as I understood by watching the video, the reviewers got more or less the recording times stated by Canon. No surprise here. Also it is no surprise that the EOS R5 is not the tool for hour-long 8K video production. Unfortunately, at a certain point it seems the reviewer confuse the EOS R5 with a professional high-res broadcasting camera. Nevertheless, a review that’s definitely worth to watch.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L Review (nothing short of outstanding, Optical Limits)

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L review

Here is a Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L review by Optical Limits, formerly known as photozone.de.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L is one of the so called “boutique lenses” for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system, and it’s an outstanding optical performer.

From Optical Limit’s conclusion:

As far as sheer optical capabilities are concerned, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 USM L is nothing short of outstanding. It is one of the best – if not the best – lenses that we tested to date. The resolution is outlandish especially considering its extreme max aperture. Most lenses out there would consider themselves to be fortunate if they could deliver a peak performance similar to what the RF 85mm f/1.2 delivers at f/1.2 already. […] If it’s about the capability of producing as much object separation and background/foreground blur as possible, it doesn’t get any better. When looking a bit more into the details, there are a few imperfections though. The lens doesn’t love hard contrasts in the (rear) focus transition zone. To be fair here – you probably won’t notice this is most scenes. Out-of-focus highlights are nicely rendered. However, if you ask yours truly whether to buy this lens or the RF 85mm f/1.2 USM L DS, he’d go for the latter one. Nothing beats a creamy bokeh more but a creamier one – but that’s also a matter of taste, of course. Bokeh fringing is very well controlled albeit not totally absent at f/1.2.
