Is The Canon EOS R5 Firmware Update A Game Changer?

canon eos r5 firmware

Canon released a Canon EOS R5 firmware update. While it will likely not calm down the most exalted anti Canonites, it seems to excite others.

No Life makes the bold claim that the Canon EOS R5 firmware update is a game changer. While we do not think it is a game changer (the R5 is), it’s true that it enhances video recording times. See for yourself in the video below.

Whatever, the EOS R5 seems to be highly regarded as a stills camera. In particular, the EOS R5 autofocus system seems to be huge leap forwards. Canon EOS R6 Review -A Great Photographers’ Camera (DPReview)

canon eos r6 review

DPReview posted their Canon EOS R6 review.

They say it’s “not the hybrid king, but a great photographers’ camera“. From their conclusion:

The Canon EOS R6 is an easy camera to underestimate if you’ve only read or heard about it. You can look at its much-discussed video or resolution shortcomings and imagine it’s a near miss. But when you go out shooting with it, particularly for stills photography, it quickly reveals itself as a genuinely excellent camera.

Its 20MP sensor is a little lower in resolution than its peers but not to a degree that makes any appreciable difference. Its low light performance is very good and its dynamic range gives you plenty of flexibility when it comes to processing.

[…]

The R6 is a little less sure-footed when it comes to video. The specs are impressive, the separation of stills and video settings is well thought through and the autofocus is very good. However, while the 40-or-so minute time limit on 4K capture sounds like plenty, any use of the camera starts to chip away at that total, meaning it can restrict your videography more than you might expect. This and the significant rolling shutter means it’s not quite a strong a video tool as the specs seem to imply. Again, though, the results are frequently very impressive.

Canon EOS R5 Review – Electronic Shutter Useful For Action Photography?

canon eos r5 review 8k video firmware updste

Spoiler alert: no EOS R5 overheating issue when using the electronic shutter.

Here is a Canon EOS R5 review that focuses on a particular feature of the camera: the electronic shutter and how well it suits for action/bird/sport photography.

Jan Wegener discusses these topics in his 15 minutes video below.

Rolling shutter or not? That’s the big question. If there is a rolling shutter effect with the Canon EOS R5, how bad is it and does it make sense to use the electronic shutter for action bird photography? A lot of you asked me this question, so I tested it out and will share my findings with you today and share when I think it makes sense to use the electronic shutter and when it’s best not to use it.

A Small Scotch Tape Hack Might Solve The Canon EOS R5 Overheating Issue

canon eos r5 overheating

The heat production on the Canon EOS R5 is still object of discussions and hacks. Here is one that’s inexpensive and at least according to the author seems to work for the EOS R5 overheating. Caution is advised, especially if you do not know what you are doing.

The clip below by J. Marcus Photography explains what the scotch tape is about and what it does with the EOS R5 overheating.

Canon EOS R5 Review From A Hybrid Shooter’s Point Of View

canon eos r5 review 8k video firmware updste

Here is a Canon EOS R5 review that’s neither focused on sole video nor only on stills photography.

Bryan Wilkat looks at the Canon EOS R5 from the point of view of a hybrid shooter, i.e. someone who need the EOS R5 for both video and still photography work. Bryan doesn’t seem to be entirely fond of the EOS R5. He says:

I’ve been a Canon user since 2011 but no, sadly I’m not on their payroll… I truly wanted this camera to kill it but sometimes, it falls short. After a little more than two weeks of use, here is my (hybrid shooter) real world Canon R5 review with some sample photos, ungraded/graded footage, some C-Log shots, some 4K 120p & 4K 60p slow motion and much more. Most of this video was shot on the R5 in 4K 23.976fps unless otherwise mentioned, or if the camera was in the shot, then it was filmed on the Panasonic S1H.

There are already tons of technical reviews out there that did all the tedious tests, this review video is more about how the camera performed in real situations. Sadly, as much as I wanted to avoid talking about it, the camera’s overheating limitations did play a large role in my opinion about this camera and because of that major design flaw, I won’t recommend it to hybrid shooters (with the current firmware). But having said that, if you’re mindful of what causes the overheating, many people could probably make this camera work for them if you don’t mind missing some shots here and there. However, for Canon to hang on to their reputation as a leader in the industry, I believe they really need to address these (seemingly artificial) limitations in a firmware update or with a full blown hardware recall because it’s 2020 and many of us are hybrid users. From my limited time with this camera, I’ve concluded that it’s near impossible to use this camera professionally on a photo and video gig, the way it was intended (or at least, the way it was marketed!).

The EOS R5 seems to be highly regarded as a stills camera and unfortunately less as a video camera. In particular, the autofocus system seems to be huge leap forwards.
