New Canon EF 85mm L lens on its way? [CW2]

EF 85mm F/1.2L

Canon might announce a new EF 85mm L lens in 2016, possibly at Photokina 2016.

The new 85mm is said to feature Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics first seen on the new EF 35mm f/1.4L II lens. Moreover, the new 85mm is weather sealed (as all recent L lenses), might have a new manual focus system, and it might be lighter. Will it still be f/1.2? No info so far.

We are currently flooded by Canon rumors. Take everything with a big grain of salt. The EF 85mm f/1.2L was released in 2003, a replacement is plausible.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II specifications suggestion [CW2] – UPDATE

Eos 6d Mark Ii

Update: I just learned (thanks lw) that this rumor originated from a forumI am not downgrading it because all in all it sounds plausible and it is covered by previous rumors. But still.

Original post:

A rumor suggesting a set of feature for the upcoming (2016) Canon EOS 6D Mark II. Some of the specs leaked first here on CW. Please note that it seldom happens that spec lists leaking months before an announcement are very accurate.

  • 24mp Full Frame CMOS
  • 1.5 stops better at higher ISO
  • Low-light autofocus (centre point) at -5 EV
  • Two AF systems are currently being tested or the EOS 6D Mark II and which was chosen is unknown at this time. There will be more AF points than the current camera.
  • WiFi with NFC and GPS
  • Wireless battery charging with the Qi standard
  • Internally Canon switches from VxWorks (Could have meant DRYOS) to an Android-based embedded OS, 6D Mark II will be the first Android-based camera from Canon.
  • Dual-pixel autofocus technology
  • Touchscreen
  • Swivel LCD a-la-70D
  • Anti-flicker a-la-7DII
  • Will ship in a new box design in gold colour.

Take it with lotsa salt, but if true this makes up a pretty solid replacement for the EOS 6D. Basically, the suggested spec lists confirms many things we have already anticipated: the EOS 6D Mark II will continue to be Canon’s entry level full-frame DSLR, it may have a tiltable touchscreen, WiFi and GPS, and Dual Pixel AF. Having an AF system able to focus even at -5EV would be a game changer to me.

The quoted rumor also suggests two AF systems are currently tested. I was told there are two 6D2 models undergoing tests. I think my source then likely got confused. Finally, I am bit sceptical about the EOS 6D Mark II being an Android-based DSLR.

Canon EOS 80D specs floating around (not the real stuff) [CW1]

Eos 70d

A set of specs said to belong to the Canon EOS 80D is floating around the web. As with other fake rumors of lately, this one too originated from a forum.

Please note that it is impossible to have reliable EOS 80D specifications so early. While the specs below may look plausible to you, it’s nothing more than a randomly assembled set of specs.

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor & Digic 6+ or 7 Image Processor
  • 3.0″ Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD Monitor
  • Full HD 1080p Video Capture
  • 49-Point AF System
  • Hybrid CMOS AF III
  • Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC
  • Continuous shooting rate of up to 8 fps

I doubt the EOS 80D will have 24MP, it will likely be more, Don’t take it with a grain of salt, take a truckload of it. However, the EOS xxD series gets updated every three years. The EOS 60D was announced in 2010, and the EOS 70D in 2013. 2016 will most likely be the year of the EOS 80D. That’s the only reliable part of the rumor, and we already knew it.

Canon full-frame mirrorless camera coming in 2016, early prototype existing in Canon labs? [CW2]

canonlogoQuestionMark2

A few weeks ago we had an interesting rumor, suggesting Canon may go serious about their EOS M system in 2016. There was no mention of full-frame mirrorless cameras.

I have been told (thanks) that Canon may indeed announce a full-frame mirrorless camera in 2016. I rate the rumor CW2 since I had so many misleading rumors about Canon’s mirrorless plans in the past. The source insisted to say that some sort of early prototype already exists, though it never came out of Canon’s labs. That’s to say that there are no test units out in the wild but just (if true) a prototype in a very early stage of development, still undergoing lab tests and development. It sounds at least plausible.

While I am sure Canon has the skills and the know-how to produce a full-frame mirrorless camera, I am pretty cautious with such rumors. A full-frame mirrorless camera is rumored since at least two years. The source promised to deliver some specs in the near future. We will see.

For the time being I guess most Canon shooters would be more than happy if Canon eventually decides to put all their tech skills and knowledge in a truly serious EOS M camera. The EOS M3 is an important step forward (for Canon), but it is not enough. What Canon needs to do is making a mirrorless camera that appeals also to people not having scores on Canon glass on their shelves.

Stay tuned on CW!
