The secret life of Canon rumors (or: how rumors change ownership)

A user in the DPReview forum is posting fake EOS 5D Mark IV rumors since a while. Now he posted a new rumor.

I am particularly proud to learn that an important rumor I got back in April was considered good enough to be reposted in a forum. Unfortunately, the generous user totally forgot to credit the source of the rumor.

The rumor in the DPReview forum (posted first on CW) was about a possible model split of the EOS 5D Mark IV. The specs we got back in April have been reposted, using different monikers.

Three more Samyang/Rokinon XEEN cine lenses coming?

XEEN

Our friends at DicaHub spotted some new information about Samyang/Rokinon XEEN cine lens lineup.

Last week Samyang/Rokinon annouced three new lenses in a new lens line-up called XEEN. The lenses are a 24mm, a 50mm, and a 85mm, all are T1.5.

It appears that Samyang/Rokinon has three more XEEN lenses ready to be announced, an ultrawide lens that’s either 14mm or 16mm, a 35mm lens, and a telephoto that may be either 100mm or 135mm.

Samyang/Rokinon’s new cine lenses are priced $2,495, pretty good price for such lenses.

Canon working on EF 800mm f/5.6 DO IS lens? [CW2]

Canon EF 800mm F/5.6L IS

Canon might have an EF 800mm f/5.6 DO IS lens in development. A pertinent patent was spotted in December 2012.

A recent rumor suggests that Canon is developing more DO super telephoto lenses and that 800mm is one of the optical designs. “DO” stands for diffractive optical elements.

Could this be an update for the Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens? It’s possible. The EF 800mm f/5.6L IS was announced back in 2001, a replacement is likely.

Take everything with a grain of salt, since most of the rumor is based on speculation.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II to shoot 14fps in raw mode? [CW3]

canonlogoQuestionMark2

New tidbits about the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X Mark II emerged.

The EOS-1D X Mark II is said to shot a 14 fps burst in full raw mode. And it’s murmured it will do it with a 24MP sensor.

When set to its Continuous High Speed setting, the EOS-1D X does 12 fps with an 18MP sensor. Doing 14 fps at 24MP would be a great achievement for Canon, and a feature that will excite professional sport photographers.

The rumour says nothing about ISO range. The EOS-1D X has an ISO range of 100–51200 (up to 204800 in H2 mode), so I guess the 1D X Mark II will do at least 100-102400 (if not 100-204800), and who knows where it will go with the H2 mode).

The EOS-1D X Mark II will be Canon’s next great professional tool for sport and action photographers. It is still unclear when to expect the announcement. Most hints point to an announcement towards the end of 2015. The EOS-1D X Mark II will likely be announced before the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 6D Mark II, both expected in Q1 2016.

Is the Canon EOS M3 coming to the USA? [CW2]

EOS M3

We (thanks) and others got word that Canon may introduce the EOS M3 to the US market.

I do not think this will happen. It happens rarely that big companies change their global marketing strategies after the introduction of a product. Still, the reasons for not selling the M3 on the US market are hidden to me. This has probably have to do with the fact that mirrorless system sales are struggling in the States, and with the huge marketing flop the EOS M was. Btw, the first EOS M was available in the USA.

If you live in the USA you can still get the EOS M3 without having to rely on dubious eBay sellers. DigitalRev sells the EOS M3 and ships internationally.

Sigma 12-24mm lens coming (Art and Contemporary versions)? [CW3]

Sigma 24-35mm F/2

Is Sigma working on a new 12-24mm lens? Latest rumors suggest they are.

It appears the company is working on a new lens, a 12-24mm wide angle lens. This lens is said to be released in two versions, one “Art” and the other “Contemporary”. This is not the first time Sigma releases two versions of a lens. They did the same with the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG, released as “Sport” and “Contemporary” version. For the time being it is not clear if it will be for full-frame or APS-C sensors. My guess is for FF.

Sigma has a 12-24mm lens in their line-up, the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM, released in 2011. I think this rumor is solid. Stay tuned.
