Another mention of the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS lens [CW2]

canon lens rentals

From time to time the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS lens gets a mention somewhere. The first time this lens was rumored goes back to 2012. The latest bits suggest “that Canon is actively working on an EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS lens” and “that two or three prototypes exist, but no final design has been decided on“, and finally to “not expect this lens from Canon for 18-24 months at the earliest“.

The EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS is said to feature BR optics. The rumor also suggests that the major reason Canon did not yet announce this lens is due to the fact that the lens would become too big with IS. The [shoplink 2160]EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II[/shoplink] was released instead.

Some fun to start the week with: Canon set to acquire Sigma? [CW1]

Sigma-Logo

Let’s start the week with another wishmor (wishful rumor), or whatever you want to name it. Just got this in my inbox:

Canon is interested in acquiring Sigma and has made two offers. Its first offer at 7x Sigma’s net value was rejected by Sigma but Canon quickly hit again with a 2nd offer of unknown valuation. There are long talks between the two companies. No idea what will happen with Sigma’s products if the buyout goes forward.

No comment :-)

I told you: Canon’s 120MP DSLR could be announced before 2018

canon 120MP dslr

A few days ago I was speculating when we might see Canon’s 120MP sensor go into production. My bet was 2017, more likely 2018.

It appears my thoughts are backed up by Canon itself. A recent rumor, quoting “a couple of people at Canon“, suggests that “the 120mp DSLR concept that was shown this week at Canon EXPO is at least 2 years away“.

Even without having a couple of people at Canon, it is pretty safe to assume that Canon will release a production model with the new full-frame 120MP sensor very soon, i.e. in the next 2-3 years. The prototype shown at Canon Expo 2015 in NYC is in a very advanced stadium of development.

Rumor or Wishmor: color top LCD coming to Canon DSLRs? [CW2]

canon rumorscanon rumors

Thanks for the tip. I just got an email suggesting Canon is working on a test project “evaluating the usefulness of putting a colour top LCD on its DSLRs“.

According to the source this is a blue skies concept. In the world of scientific research a blue skies project is conceptual work where a real-world application is not immediately considered. It’s an idea/project that’s going through evaluation and early development. Following the rumor there is neither “talk […] about whether this will make it into actual products“nor any “connection with the product development teams“.

The idea is nice. A colour top LCD would increase not only accessibility but also open new possibilities to use the display. On the other hand it means more battery drainage.

Is this a wishmor (wishful rumor) or should we consider it as a possibility? Comments welcome.

More “Wishmors” floating around (EOS 80D)

eos 70d

I am so much flooded with Canon rumors that I decided to create the concept of Wishmor, a wishful rumor. It’s never been so hard with everything related to Canon rumors.

The latest wishmor I got concerns the Canon EOS 80D. If the three years interval of EOS xxD announcements holds on, then the EOS 80D will be announced towards the end of Summer 2016. The [shoplink 14246]Canon EOS 70D[/shoplink] was announced in Summer 2013. That’s to say that it is impossible to have detailed specifications lists so early. It’s still a year to go, keep the salt ready. This spec list was sent to me via email but I guess it showed up in some forum before. Here it is:

  • 80D is already being tested by selected photographers around the world.
  • Announcement: December 2015
  • 24 megapixels, that’s a new sensor not the same as other 24mp EOS bodies
  • ADC now on the sensor itself, expect much cleaner fine detail
  • 80D’s ISO 6400 is like 70D’s ISO 3200
  • DR at ISO 100 improved 21% compared to 70D
  • Single DIGIC 6 (not 6+)
  • It has DPAF, same as 70D.
  • Much more richer colour tones because of new Colour Filter Array (CFA) engineered with germanium microstructures, it also allows more photons on the sensor which helps the ISO performance
  • Canon claims 8.1 fps but I feel it’s more like 7.5 fps, maybe will be improved in the final product
  • Buffer will be less than 70D. That was a trade-off to keep the cost low.
  • No 4K but has 1080 60fps, it still does line-skipping
  • Both Wifi and GPS, also NFC
  • A new more sturdy swivel screen hing design. Canon also readies a full-frame camera with swivel LCD.
  • Single UHS-II SD slot
  • Astrophotography version of 80D will also be released, expected three months after 80D release
  • Appears to have a new software system but it’s much slower than the old menus, camera feels sluggish, maybe this will be fixed in the final product (the firmware supplied to tester photographers is version 0.7.2, this probably means the programmers still work on it)
  • There will be a new strap design

Fits well into the concept of wishmor. What do you think…?
