Canon announcement for August 14th, Rebel SL2 and two lenses coming? [CW3]

Canon Rebel SL1/EOS 100D

The latest Canon rumor that surfaced on the web states that Canon is set to announce a DSLR and 2 lenses on August 14th.

I do not think this announcement will regard the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV or the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. Both DSLRs are expected for Q1 2016. However, given Canon’s secrecy and the fact that as good as all Canon rumors of the last 2-3 years got it right only a few weeks before an announcement, it is still possible that we will see the 5D4 and 6D2.

Could the Canon Rebel SL2 be announced in August? There was a rumor back in May 2015 suggesting a Rebel SL2 announcement for August. The Rebel SL1/EOS 100D was announced March 21st, 2013. That’s almost two and half year away. If the rumor of an August 14th announcement is reliable, then this announcement might indeed regard the Rebel SL2. I think a 50% chance is likely for this rumor.

What about the lenses? We heard that the EF 35mm f/1.4L Mark II is ready for production. Other lenses that are rumored to get announced soon are the EF-M 85mm f/1.8 IS STM, a new EF-M 18-55mm IS STM, and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L Mark II.

Stay tuned, we will soon know more. What do you think?

Canon EOS 6D Mark II rumor (and user poll), two test-units out in the wild? [CW2]

Canon RumorQuestionMark2

In the past we had rumors pointing to different sensor resolutions for the Canon EOS 6D Mark II: 24MP and 28MP. A new rumor I got (thanks) suggests that Canon is still testing both scenarios.

Is this likely? I guess it is a bit late to make tests to decide if it is better to release a 24MP EOS 6D2 or a 28MP EOS 6D2. Most of us agree that the EOS 6D Mark II will be announced by Q1 2016. Canon still testing the EOS 6D Mark II doesn’t sound very likely to me.

However, we do not yet have reliable rumors about the EOS 6D Mark II sensor resolution. Here at CW we got rumors about a 28MP sensor, other suggest it may have 24MP sensor. Might this post start some new EOS 6D2 rumors.

There are also rumors suggesting the EOS 6D Mark II will go upmarket. There is some misunderstanding or confusion here. The EOS 6D2 is not “going upmarket”, it will just have all the new features that technology can offer in 2015-16. The EOS 6D Mark II will be Canon’s next entry-level, full-frame DSLR.

While I do not give much credit to a rumor stating Canon is still testing two possible models of the EOS 6D Mark II, I am pretty curious to learn what you think will be the sensor resolution of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. And feel free to let me know what you think in the comment section.

About our rumour rating:

  • CW1 – probably fake rumor, not reliable (less than 15% chance to be real)
  • CW2 – rumor from an unknown/new source, but otherwise at least a plausible rumor (15%-40% chance to be real)
  • CW3 – around 50% chance to be real, coming from a known source, or from new source with good insight in Canon’s business
  • CW4 – rumor from a known source that was right in the past, high probability to be true (60%-80% chance to be real)
  • CW5 – as good as certain to be true

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II ready for production?

EF 35mm f/1.4L
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L

Is the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II ready for production? That’s what a new rumor suggests.

The rumor doesn’t come with an announcement date, but Fall 2015 is a good candidate. The rumored specifications:

  • Dust & Weather Sealing
  • All the latest coatings
  • Longer than the current version
  • Smaller diameter than the current version
  • Smaller filter thread
  • New hood design
  • Unknown weight

Apparently Canon delayed the announcement of the EF 35mm f/1.4L II because the company is still trying to produce enough units of other high demand lenses.

Weird rumor: Canon working on a 36MP full-frame monochrome sensor? [CW1] – Edit

canon rumors
Leica M Monochrome

Edit: decided to downrate the rumor to CW1. The message was not clear enough and honestly I think this is just a hoax.

Original post:

I got a somewhat weird rumor today (thanks). The rumor suggests Canon is working on a 36MP full-frame monochrome sensor.

According to the source, the success of Leica’s monochrome cameras has influenced Canon and motivated the company to produce their own b&w full-frame sensor. The sensor, still according to the source, could be announced in the first week of July 2015.

The rest of the message is a bit confusing. I am not sure I’ve got everything correctly. The source names an “A7 body and FE lens mount” and that a “slimline lens mount adapter for Canon and Nikon” will be available for the rumored b&w, full-frame DSLR. The source never names a “Canon DSLR”, only a “Canon sensor”. Sounds like a Sony DSLR with a Canon sensor! Is this in the realm of possibilities? :-)

Well, this will not be the DSLR featuring the Canon 18MP sensor that’s rumored since a while. Canon making a monochrome full-frame DSLR doesn’t sound totally absurd to me. However, new source and big amount of salt. What do you think?

Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R shipping in Europe next week

 EOS 5DS

It appears the Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are starting to ship in Europe. I got word from readers that resellers in Italy and Germany are going to ship pre-orders next week. Never the less, both cameras are still not available for pre-order on Amazon Germany or Amazon UK, and other Amazon EU sites.

Canon 18MP full-frame sensor rumor [CW3]

Canon RumorCanon Rumor
I’m not entirely sure how to classify this rumor. Got word that Canon is indeed working on a DSLR with an 18MP full-frame sensor.

There have been rumors in the past pointing to a Canon 18MP sensor. There was a mention of such a sensor back in February. Then, in May, there was a rumor about a full-frame astrophotography DSLR by Canon. The latter made me think about the previously rumored 18MP FF sensor. Finally, and not in chronological order, there was also a somewhat weird rumor in April, suggesting another model split of the EOS 5D line-up (after EOS 5DS and 5DS R), one being a straight update for the EOS 5D Mark III (call it EOS 5D Mark IV), the other being a video oriented, specialised model with lower resolution and all the videographers goodies (4K, etc).

It appears Canon may indeed be working on something with an 18MP sensorSomething, that’s going to have the shape of a full-frame DSLR, and industry leading low light performance. That’s what I was told (thanks). And that’s really all. I still do not know what it is going to be. I am now less confident that it might be a video oriented split of the EOS 5D line. Some educated posts on video-oriented sites make me believe that a 4K enabled, cinematographer-oriented version of the 5D doesn’t make much sense. At least not after the XC10.

Will it be an astrophotography full-frame DSLR with an 18MP sensor? I am not into astrophotography so I do not know if an 18MP full-frame sensor is enough in such settings. On the other hand, good low light performance is for sure a game changer for those shooting the milky-way at midnight.

Canon just released the world’s highest resolution full-frame DSLRs, featuring sensors with 50MP, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R. How does a rumor about an 18MP sensor fit into a scenario where everyone seems to be occupied to be the first in an insane resolution race?

While I think that a further split of the EOS 5D line-up is possible, I wonder if there is a market or a niche for a full-frame DSLR with an 18MP sensor in 2015. Feel free to let me know what you think.
