The Rumored RF 5.2mm Lens Seems To Be A Dual Fisheye VR Lens

A few days ago we got a rumor suggesting Canon might be set to release a RF 5.2mm f/2.8 lens. Today we know a bit more.

As Nokishita added to their original rumor, the RF 5.2mm f/2.8 lens might indeed be a dual fisheye lens for VR (virtual reality) applications:

The product category of canon’s RF 5.2mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye seems to be a VR lens.

There is more. Months ago a Canon patent application was spotted that seems to be related to the rumored RF 5.2mm lens. The patent application P2021-51282A (Japan) discusses optical formulas for a stereo lens for a full frame mirrorless camera. From the patent literature:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small lens device that can obtain a natural stereoscopic effect by setting an appropriate length of a base line.

SOLUTION: A lens device (200) includes: a first optical system (201R); a second optical system (201L) arranged in parallel to the first optical system; and a lens mount unit (202) attachable to a camera body, the first and second optical systems each having a first optical axis (OA1), a second optical axis (OA2), and a third optical axis (OA3) in order from an object side to an image side. A distance (L1) between the first and second optical systems is larger than a dimeter (φD) of the lens mount unit, and a distance (L2) between the third axes of the first and second optical systems is smaller than the dimeter (φD) of the lens mount unit.

A RF 5.2mm f/2.8 lens for the EOS R full frame mirrorless system. Interesting times ahead.

Is Canon Set To Release a RF 5.2mm f/2.8 Lens?

Not sure if this is a typo or if it is real. Canon might release a RF 5.2mm f/2.8 lens for the EOS R system, a usually very reliable rumor source suggests.

Nokishita tweeted that Canon might be set to release a RF 5.2mm f/2.8 lens. A fish-eye lens, I guess. Nokishita says:

Canon’s next RF lens will be 5.2mm f/2.8L. Check Canon’s latest accessory list for unreleased lens caps 5.2.

As far as I know, such a lens has never been rumored. What do you think? Real, or something got lost in translation?

New Unreleased Canon Cameras Show Up At Certification Authority

canon

Two yet unreleased Canon cameras showed up at a Russian certification authority. And there is an interesting fact with this registration.

The two unreleased cameras have the code-names DS126841 and DS126842. The interesting fact is, that they are mentioned along with the code-name for the Canon EOS 90D, that’s DS126801, as you can see in the image on top.

What does that mean? Do these two cameras feature an APS-C sensor? Or might they be the fabled EOS R camera with APS-C? In any case, time ago we got a suggestion that the EOS 90D might not get replaced.

Any ideas what these two cameras might be?

Canon EOS R With APS-C Rumored Again, Said To Come Second Half 2022

eos r with aps-c

The most die-hard of the implausible Canon rumors surfaced again. Although this time with some confidence. Will there be an EOS R model with an APS-C sensor?

According to the rumor mill that always propagated this rumor, Canon will announce such a camera in the second half of 2022. We still have a hard time to buy it. But we might be wrong, of course. It’s just that we don’t see Canon sidelining their EOS M system for another interchangeable lens system with APS-C sensor.

According to the source of the rumor, quoted as a “good source”, Canon will release a camera with RF mount and an APS-C imaging sensor. The imaging sensor is said to be a backside-illuminated sensor (BSI). Said sensor is rumored to get featured in “more than one camera”. It’s not known it these cameras will also have an RF mount, or not. Finally, a sensor resolution of 28-32MP is rumored.

Help us out here: do you think this is something that might happen? And if yes, what will be the future of the EOS M system? Time ago we got a suggestion that the EOS 7D Mark II will not be replaced. This lead many people to think the 7D2 will get replaced by an EOS R model with APS-C. This theory gets reinforced by the fact that the EOS M system seems not to be fit for a 7D2 replacement.

Stay tuned.
