EOS M

Update: I just installed the new firmware: It Works GREAT!! :-)

The long awaited firmware update (v. 2.0.2) for the Canon EOS M is available for download.

Got to “Support and Drivers”, then choose your operating system and then you can download the firmware.

Details of changes:

Firmware Version 2.0.2 incorporates the following fixes and improvements.

1. Improves focusing speed in One-Shot AF mode.

2. Now supports EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. *When placing the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM without conducting the firmware update, although rare, at times the EOS M will not function.

3. Corrects errors in the Simplified Chinese, Hungarian, Traditional Chinese and Korean language menus.

Firmware Version 2.0.2 is for cameras with firmware Version 1.0.9 or earlier. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 2.0.2, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

If you wish to update your camera’s firmware, please read this page carefully before using the download service.

Preparations for a firmware update:

Windows: After the downloaded compressed file (.zip file) is extracted, a firmware folder is created. *Extracting the downloaded file: Right-click the zip file, and then select Extract All to extract the file.

The extracted folder contains the firmware (file name: EOSM1202.FIR , file size: 17,743,884 bytes) and instructions on the firmware update procedures (a PDF file in five languages: Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese).

Before starting the firmware update operations, please confirm the contents of the download, and carefully read through the firmware update procedures.

Photography Blog reviewed Canon’s full-frame pancake lens, the amazing EF 40mm f/2.8 STM (now just $149), a lens with an excellent value for the money. All other reviews I featured here on Canon Watch confirmed the good optical performance of this relatively “cheap” lens. Cheap, here, means inexpensive and doesn’t mean there are compromises on build or optical quality. Sure, it is not an “L” grade lens, but the little pancake has more to offer than just a low price tag or a great ease of use. The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM has a discount of $50 and is sold for $149 at both Adorama and B&H.

dpreview published their review of the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS Extender 1.4x lens. They reviewed the lens together with the folks at DxOMark. Some excerpts from the conclusion:

  • […] it’s clear that the 200-400mm is exceptionally good
  • On full frame it’s near-flawless, and there’s practically no perceptible sharpness penalty for using the extender
  • AF with static subjects is very fast and extremely accurate
  • […] unique among top-end super-telephoto zooms
  • […] absolutely stellar optics and innovative design earn the lens our top award

The EF 200-400mm f/4l IS 1.4x got dpreview’s Gold Award. DxOMark says about the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x:

[…] the Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X offers image quality that’s close to the best in class, along with the convenience and versatility that’s otherwise lacking with those fixed focal length equivalents.
