Canon will temporarily shut down service facilities in California, New Jersey, and Illinois and Hawaii because of the spread of COVID-19.

Due to the “stay at home” directives from authorities in California, New Jersey, Illinois, and Hawaii, as well as local “Shelter in Place” orders, our Canon service facilities in those states are temporarily closed until further notice. Products needing repair can be directed to our Factory Service Center in Newport News, Virginia. Please note that walk-in service is not available at this location. We apologize for any inconvenience and delays that may occur during this time. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding.

The Canon EOS R5 Is A Mirrorless 5-series Camera, Canon Exec Says

It was already clear to most of us that the Canon EOS R5 was playing in the same league as the EOS 5D-lineup.

Now it’s officially stated by David Parry, Canon’s Product Marketing Specialist, in an interview with Techradar about the Canon EOS R5.

Here are some excerpts:

So is that why this camera is called the EOS R5?

“It’s aimed at that level of the market. This isn’t a replacement for the 5D Mark IV or anything like that. But this is a mirrorless 5-series, it’s aimed at that segment of the market” […]

The EOS R5 has impressive video credentials. How does it handle heat issues when shooting 8K video?

“We’ve been doing this for a while now and we’ve learnt a lot of techniques to dissipate heat on other products that we have in our lineup. For example, being able to move components around, and being able to have them further away from each other” […]

The EOS R5 has Animal Eye AF. Does this work in both video and stills?

“We can’t divulge that at the moment, but what’s really exciting about that for us is that it’s dogs, cats and birds – as far as I’m aware no other manufacturer has mentioned birds in their Animal AF“

Canon already announced the development of the EOS R5. A few weeks ago Canon revealed more EOS R5 specifications to stop “fantasy speculations“. The announcement is expected to be released in June 2020 but it might get delayed because of the Coronavirus outbreak. In the interview David Parry says “we can’t say whether [the release of the R5] is going to be affected or not, but let’s just wait and see what happens over the next few weeks“.

So, instead of tearing down lenses, this time Roger Cicala gives some valuable and professional advice about how to disinfect camera gear and the space where you are working.

Alcohol  and Soap

Despite what some manufacturers have said, we, and every repair shop I know have used isopropyl alcohol in 60% or greater concentrations on camera equipment for a long time and haven’t seen any adverse effects. Some manufacturers said 99% isopropyl might maybe affect lens coatings. I respectfully disagree, although I will say vigorous rubbing can affect some lens coatings, so take it easy and don’t use wire brushes or such.

Don’t soak it; that is asking for trouble and isn’t necessary. Just moisten it. Use common sense to try to keep your disinfectant on the outside and not let it run into the inside. A light mist with a spray bottle, or a cloth or paper towel dipped in alcohol works great for large surfaces. You might want to dip a Q tip or similar thing to get into small areas or places where you’d rather not spray.

Canon Rumor: 5 New EOS M Lenses Might Be Announced Within Next 2 Years

Here is a Canon rumor we got about the future of the EOS M mirrorless camera system.

A new source told us that Canon is planning to expand the EF-M lens lineup with five new lenses. The commercial success of the Canon EOS M50 seems to have motivated Canon to develop new EF-M lenses.

The five lenses that Canon might release over the next two years are:

  • EF-M 15mm f/2 STM
  • EF-M 52mm f/2 STM
  • EF-M 62mm f/4 Macro IS STM
  • EF-M 18-45mm f/2.8-4 IS STM
  • EF-M 100-300mm f/5.6-8 IS STM

According to the source, the EF-M 52mm f/2 STM and EF-M 100-300mm f/5.6-8 IS STM where initially planned to be released in late 2020. The Coronavirus outbreak and the disruptions in supply and manufacturing chains will make it likely that both these lenses will be released in 2021 along with the other lenses.
