Canon EOS R With IBIS Is Coming, Canon Exec Says, And EF-M Mount Is Not Dead

Canon Eos R Mark Ii Rumor

Amateur Photographer sat down with Canon execs at CP+ 2019, and the talk was about Canon’s mirrorless full frame EOS R system.

The short interview gives some interesting insights in Canon’s agenda. The EOS M is the mirrorless system with APS-C sensor, Canon confirms. However, when asked if they will make an EOS R with APS-C sensor, the answer is somewhat ambiguous while still confirming that the EF-M mount is the APS-C mirrorless mount. Judge by yourself:

AP: Are you going to keep EOS M in its existing form, or are you going to make a APS-C camera with the RF mount?

YM: That’s a product development for the future so I can’t go into detail, and the market will dictate what sort of direction we should take. If the customers do want a small size, lightweight mount I believe there is room for that, so as we said […] we will continue to work with the M mount.

When asked about IBIS the answer is more straightforward.

AP: There have been quite a lot of requests from customers and reviewers alike for IBIS on the EOS R, not to mention dual card slots. How do you respond to this?

YM: Yes, we are aware of these voices… We are thinking how we can develop the line-up. With the R and RP we look at the entirety of the package, as mentioned. In terms of IBIS, we are looking into it for the future. We believe IBIS will work together hand in hand with optical IS lenses, such as the ones you see in front of you, to offer better features.

There is more to grasp in the interview at Amateur Photographer.

Canon Working On Global Shutter Sensor With Dual Memory Pixels, Research Paper

Global Shutter

Canon published a research paper in the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, named “A 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor with dual in-pixel charge domain memory” (by Masahiro Kobayashi, Hiroshi Sekine, Takafumi Miki, Takashi Muto, Toshiki Tsuboi, Yusuke Onuki, Yasushi Matsuno, Hidekazu Takahashi, Takeshi Ichikawa, and Shunpike Inoue).

From the paper’s abstract:

[expander_maker id=”2″ more=”Click to read the article” less=”Read less”]

In this paper, we describe a newly developed 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor (CIS) with dual in-pixel charge domain memories (CDMEMs) has about 5.3 M effective pixels and achieves 19 ke− full well capacity, 30 ke−/lxcenterdots sensitivity, 2.8 e- rms temporal noise, and −83 dB parasitic light sensitivity. In particular, we describe the sensor structure for improving the sensitivity and detail of the readout procedure. Furthermore, this image sensor realizes various readout with dual CDMEMs. For example, an alternate multiple-accumulation high dynamic range readout procedure achieves 60 fps operation and over 110 dB dynamic range in one-frame operation and is suitable in particular for moving object capturing. This front-side-illuminated CIS is fabricated in a 130 nm 1P4M with light shield CMOS process.

What’s Happening With The Canon EOS-1D X Series?

Canon Eos-1d X Mark Ii

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is Canon’s top dog, the Canon DSLR for professionals. Period.

Announced three years ago, the EOS-1D X Mark II isn’t yet ripe for replacement. Most high end Canon DSLRs have a longer lifecycle. However, it seems Canon is already actively working on the EOS-1D X Mark III.

The announcement of the EOS-1D X Mark III might come at the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020. It’s still a long time to go.

Rumor has it that Canon might release the EOS-1D X Mark III ahead of the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan, which start July 2020. No specifications leaked so far, besides that the EOS-1D X Mark III will be more of an evolutionary than revolutionary update.

There have been rumors suggesting Canon might ditch the EOS-1D X line in favour of a mirrorless offering. This is unreal for the time being. It will take years before the folks shooting at events like the Olympics will switch from their trusted workhorses to a new technology.
