The Canon EOS R5 can record up to 4 hours of 4KHQ video at 30p with an external recorder, if you know some simple tweaks.

The tweaks have been discovered by No Life, and are documented in the video below. Wayne of No Life says:

The Canon R5 does not seem to overheat, externally, if you don’t have any cards in the camera. In this video I show (with as much proof as I can), how I’m able to record up to 4 hours in 4KHQ 30fps, 10-bit CLOG, with IBIS and DPAF all on, with no issues like the blackout or screen off issue myself and Gerald were having.

The setup here is as follows – HDMI out of Canon R5, into Atomos, out of Atomos, into ATEM, out of ATEM, into OBS on the PC. This is no different that Geralds livestreaming setup, and showcasing the times you can expect as if you were recording on the Atomos. This was to record for this long period of time, without the MASSIVE Atomos file, and still show the camera was in fact running for the entire time.

The new format brings improvements over the previous H.264 standard, such as improved file compression and bit-rate reduction.

XF-HEVC, sometimes referred to as MPEG-H Part 2 or ITU-T H.265 is the latest video coding standard presented by the ITU-T Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group organizations. The new format incorporates many improvements over H.264/MPEG-4 AVC including the ability to allow for significantly improved file compression performance relative to the existing standards. Users can experience up to a 50 percent bit-rate reduction over the prior format with equivalent image quality.

The new release of Premiere Pro also provides support for Canon’s newly announced EOS C500 Mark II cinema camera. The new camera can record in Canon’s proprietary Cinema RAW Light format, which provides the benefits of RAW recording in a more compact file size. The Canon RAW Plugin for Final Cut Pro will be updated in December to enable support for Canon Cinema RAW Light files from the EOS C500 Mark II cinema camera.

Final Cut Pro version 10.4.7 is currently available from the Mac App Store and the latest Adobe Premiere Pro release will be available in early November 2019. For more information, please visit pro.usa.canon.com.

No 4K Crop On Future Canon APS-C DSLRs (Canon EOS 90D)?

Back in February we reported that Canon might replace the EOS 80D and the EOS 7D Mark II with one new camera for both lineups. The camera would be the Canon EOS 90D.

Rumors following suggested that the EOS 7D lineup is set to be abandoned by Canon and that instead we might see a mirrorless offering.

Latest rumors address one of the strongest criticism to Canon’s implementation of 4K video on APS-C cameras, i.e. the evil crop factor, stirring heated discussions on the web. It seems the next Canon APS-C DSLR, which most likely will be the EOS 90D, will record 4K video at 32MP and with no significant crop applied.

Canon Introduces Two New UHDgc 2/3-Inch Portable Zoom Lenses Designed For 4K UHD Broadcast Cameras

Two New Lenses Deliver Key Features for the Broadcast Industry: High Image Quality and Mobility 

MELVILLE, NY, April 2, 2019 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the launch of two new additions to its UHDgc series of portable-zoom 4K UHD broadcast lenses: the CJ18ex28B and CJ15ex8.5B. These new lenses are compatible with 4K UHD broadcast cameras that have 2/3-inch sensors. Both lenses provide 4K UHD imaging quality at a price point that is affordable to the majority of the broadcast market. Additionally, the new lenses provide impressive UHD optical performance, while maintaining a compact and lightweight design to meet versatile and ever-changing needs of a broad range of video productions including documentaries, sports, events and news coverage.

The new Canon CJ18ex28B and CJ15ex8.5B portable zoom lenses utilize Canon’s proprietary optical design technology featuring materials such as fluorite and Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) glass to achieve high 4K UHD performance across the entire zoom range. In addition, these lenses support the wide color gamut approved by the ITU-R BT.2020 UHD broadcasting standard. These features are essential to HDR imaging. The ergonomics and digital servo operational controls of the lenses are similar to Canon’s current lineup of portable zoom lenses, providing users with maximum mobility in a variety of shooting situations. 

The CJ18ex28B lens features a zoom range of 28-500mm (56-1000mm with built-in 2X extender), making it ideal for capturing crisp shots at long distances, while remaining compact enough to be operated in a shoulder-mounted configuration. The CJ15ex8.5B features Canon’s exclusive Vari-Angle Prism (VAP) Image Stabilization technology to help minimize vibrations on both the horizontal and vertical axes during mobile shooting, such as during sporting events. Both of these lenses fill a unique need for specialized shooting environments in the broadcast market.
