Pioneering the Trend

Samyang has been one of the early birds in introducing compact and lightweight full frame mirrorless lenses for RF mount. Description Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Series II for EF-M mount:

An apt telephoto prime for portraiture and other selective compositions, the Canon EF-M-mount Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Series II Lens is characterized by its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture to suit working in low-light conditions and for controlling depth of field. The optical design incorporates one hybrid aspherical element that helps to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering. An Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting in order to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity. Here is another take on the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS. The RF 85mm f/1.2L DS features Canon’s “Defocus Smoothing” optical technology.

Alex Barrera compares the RF 85mm f/1.2L DS with the RF 85mm f/1.2L (i.e. the same lens without Defocus Smoothing).

This is one of the more expensive lenses for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system, one of the so-called “boutique lenses“.

Here is a Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS review. The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS features Canon’s “Defocus Smoothing” otpical technology (see video below to learn more about it).

Lens Rentals reviewed the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS. They liked the “incredible sharpness”, fast and accurate AF, the “Defocus Smoothing” technology, and obviously the high quality build quality of a Canon L lens. They didn’t like so much the price (who does?) and the fact you loss approximately 1.3 stops of light with Defocus Smoothing.

From their conclusion:

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS left [the reviewer] conflicted. On one hand, its a really great lens with incredible sharpness. On the other hand, it’s an overpriced great lens with a gimmicky moniker. I love this lens and the images I was able to produce while using it, but I don’t think the Defocus Smoothing made the images any better or worse. For me personally, this lens has made me further my appreciation for the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L non-DS, as it shares the same level of sharpness without the $300 added to the cost.

Here is another Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L review.

Dustin Abbott reviewed the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L lens for the EOS R full frame mirrorless system. The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L is a highly regarded lens, and Dustin Abbott’s review confirms it.

From his conclusion:

It is, quite simply, a lens that no other system has right now. It delivers Otus-like levels of optical perfection while adding a larger maximum aperture, autofocus, and weather sealing while costing nearly $2000 less. When you pair this with the Eye AF tracking of the Canon’s full frame R cameras, you get a portrait, wedding, and event tool that will make the life of such photographers easier. I’ve already seen some stunning examples of photos taken with the lens.
Clearly this is a lens for those with deeper pockets, but is also the kind of exceptional lens that can make one’s work that much more special. It is built to last for many years to come, and is a lens that will only get better as Canon delivers higher resolution cameras with greater dynamic range. Perhaps the RF85L should be viewed more as an investment, and it could be argued that it would be worth owning fewer lenses to have a few exceptional ones like this one. It’s too big, too heavy, and too expensive…but also too exceptional to ignore despite all those things.
