Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II First Impression Review (DPreview)

Powershot G1 X Mark II

DPreview posted a first impression review of the Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II. The review isn’t entirely positive, have a look in the “shooting experience” section of the review. Among other notes, the reviewer writes:

The camera can certainly be held with one hand, though I preferred the more solid feel of the ‘custom grip’. There are a lot of buttons that surround the thumb rest so you have to be careful, as some buttons can be easy to bump. Speaking of buttons, I found myself scratching my head as to why there are two Wi-Fi-related buttons, and I kept pressing the upper one thinking it was for playback mode. […]

In nearly all situations, the autofocus system performed admirably. While I wasn’t blown away by its speed, I didn’t have to wait for it to lock on its subject

About the built-in WiFi:

Some manufacturers do better than others when it comes to setting up Wi-Fi, and Canon is one of the worst. To be brief, the Image Gateway website leaves much to be desired, there are too many steps required, and the camera takes a long time to connect to a network. The bottom line is that Canon’s Wi-Fi feature, while comprehensive, could be a lot more user-friendly.

I agree about how poorly Canon integrates WiFi functionality in their cameras. This could definitely be done better, and more user friendly.

Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II DxOMarked (and it doesn’t shine)

Powershot G1 X Mark II

The Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II (price & specs) got tested by DxOMark, and as usual the sensor score is below the competitors. I know many people doesn’t hold much trust in DxOMark’s sensor scores. It is also my opinion that it doesn’t say much about real world performance of a sensor. On the other hand, it is a engineering measure, and it says somewhat about a sensor.

Canon camera sensors have a long history of scoring worse than the competition, but all the Canon DSLRs I own and owned never failed to deliver impressing image quality. The Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II follows this tradition, scoring a mere 58. But there is a (small) surprise: when set to ISO 800 and above, the Powershot G1 X Mark II becomes a strong performer.

In the conclusion DxOMark writes:

At first sight, the sensor performance of the G1X II doesn’t look particularly exciting with relatively low scores for color, DR and low light but a more careful look at the performance reveals that the G1X II is in fact a strong performer at high ISOs.

When set to ISO800 and more, color and DR are much more competitive, but why Canon couldn’t tweak the performance at base ISOs is somewhat puzzling. Be that as it may, the G1X II as a whole remains a tempting choice for enthusiasts, even if, at $799 plus $299 for the EVF, it looks on the pricey side.
