Canon released some statements about the new EOS M50 (), and about the company’s future mirrorless plans. Masahiro Sakata, president of Canon group member Canon Marketing Japan, gives some insights in Canon’s mirrorless strategy.
When asked about a possible high-end mirrorless camera, Mr. Sakata said “we will look at the timing and consider it”.
TOKYO — Canon will shift more of its focus to mirrorless cameras, a change in strategy spurred by sharp growth in the market.
The company boasts a commanding share of the global single-lens reflex market but was reluctant to enter the mirrorless field over concerns about cannibalizing SLR sales.
Canon said Monday that it will release an entry-level mirrorless camera next month. The product is positioned as “a strategic model” for mirrorless cameras, according to Masahiro Sakata […]
Canon hopes that the new product will attract demand from families, including mothers who enjoy taking pictures of their children.
[…]
With mirrorless cameras rapidly gaining popularity and rivals like Sony breaking into SLRs, Canon decided it must “actively roll out products for a growth market even if there is some cannibalization,” Sakata said.
[…]
The company is making efforts “to be able to respond to customer needs in any region by offering both SLR and mirrorless cameras,” said Go Tokura, a Canon executive officer.
Canon announced the EOS M50, the company’s first mirrorless camera shooting 4K video. Pre-order are open, starting at $779 for the body only option. The Canon EOS M50 will ship March 23, 2018.

A few days ahead of the announcement of Canon’s first 4K enabled MILC, a new SpeedLite, and two entry-level DSLRs, we can put order in the naming scheme Canon has chosen for their new gear (courtesy of Nokishita). We also have new images for your viewing pleasure.
The Canon EOS M50 (specifications) will be named EOS Kiss M in Japan (and Asia?). Two color options will be available, black and white. The kits will come with these lenses: 15-45mm, 18-150mm, and two double zoom kits. Shipment is expected for March 23, 2018
The Rebel T7has this name in the US. It’s named EOS 2000D in Europe, EOS 1500D in China, and EOS Kiss X90 in Japan (Asia?). Why an entry-level camera needs four different monikers is sort of a mystery to me. May be to counter grey market import flows. There will be a body only option, and one with a kit lens. Shipping expected March 23, 2018.
As for the time of writing it’s not sure if the EOS 4000D (EOS 3000D in China) will be released in Japan.
Canon will also release an EOS M100 limited kit in pink by early April 2018 (Japan only, sorry for pink fans). The SpeedLite 470EX-AI is expected to ship late April 2018.
Canon will announce the new gear on February 25/26. Stay tuned.
Nokishita posted an exhaustive list of the specifications of the upcoming Canon EOS M50, and there are new images too.
The Canon EOS M50 appears to be a very decent mirrorless camera. Now let’s wait to know the price. But I dare to say already the EOS M50 will be a bestseller, especially if Canon eventually decides to deliver more and more serious EF-M lenses. Announcement expected for February 25/26, 2018.
